Hi guys, Im new here and kinda new to tercels. I bought a 83 t4wd with 283,000 miles on it and the manual trans went. So I took it to a shop here in town and bought a new trans with only 86,000 miles and had him swap it in. Only thing, is that when he swapped it out, he left the front diff connected to the trans and swapped the whole thing. I know for a fact that my old trans had the locking front diff...but do all manual trans t4wds have a locking front diff when you put it in 4wd?
Also, the manual trans with EL...is it considered a 5spd with EL or just a 6spd?
Do all t4wd have a locking front axle?

I don't think any Tercel 4WD came with factory lockers on either end...

Really? cause I swear mine did. It was a PITA to turn around on pavement cause the tires scrubbed EXACTLY like my friends truck does that has an air locker in it. Im definitely getting the old front diff from the transmission guy when I go to pick it up.
Anybody else confirm or deny the auto locking front axle?

They never came with any "lockers". Perhaps what you're describing is a car without power steering, it can be a pain to turn the wheels when the car is stopped, I want to switch to a car with power steering for awhile since I have do to a lot parallel parking.

If It doesnt have a locker in the front than why does it scrub when turning? Its different when in 4wd so its not the lack of power steering. My old 87 had no power steering so I know what thats like. lol. Was there any after market front diff or locker that you could buy and install?
I am new to 4wds so bear with me. It might be just the 4wd doing its thing.

Re: Do all t4wd have a locking front axle?
They do not have lockers on either the front or the rear, they have a locker in the center. When the center is locked, you still have the problem of tires scrubbing on corners when in 4wd because the rear tires always turn inside the front tires. You should never use the 4wd on a good traction surface because it will tear up the center link.
