83 Toyota SR5 4x4 in need of help and opinions

Post by zoomsplatt »

hello group
new to this forum,I'm usually fooling around with diesel's but I've managed to purchase a 1983 Toyota SR 5 4x4, got it for 300 bucks , it needs some help, I'm going to have to replace bushings etc. in the front end as it develops a really bad shimmy at about 55 miles an hour, just about take your steering wheel out of your hands, put new tires on it had them balanced, rims are the stock mags with the square cover over the round hole, only got one square cover need another three, it's got a dent in the back door and the bumper, I'm supposedly going to get another one of these for parts shortly if I do I'll strip what I need and get rid of the rest here. The biggest problem I've got with this car is I'm going to have to replace a carburetor, the vehicle sat for quite awhile and the carburetor is all oxidized, I got it running okay but it's got the standard problems that happen with this carburetor, vacuum leaks etc. etc. so I've got to aftermarket carburetors, both Webbers one is a 34/34 Weber, the other is a 32/36, I've got an adapter for the 32/36 but its for a Nissan Z24 2.4 L engine so I'll bet the Jets in the Weber 32/36 aren't going to be right for the Toyota but they're easy to change, I've got an full jet kit coming for the Weber's and I found the number for the adapter or the Toyota,, the question is which carb should I use? I'm looking for straight economy only, I'll only use the vehicle mostly to get off and on the mountain here in bow Washington in the winter, I've got a Nissan diesel pickup truck that I use mostly as it will get better fuel mileage than the Toyota, usually somewhere between 35 and 38 miles per gallon and from what I can gather about 28 to 30 miles per gallon is all I'm going to get out of the Toyota even with a well tuned carburetor and engine. So how about some opinions? Do you think the Weber 34/34 will give better fuel mileage than the Weber 32/36? Or is it the other way around?
From what I can see reading here there is a lot of knowledgeable people who've already been around this racetrack, I'm sure somebody's going to have an answer. And thanks in advance. zoomsplatt

A lot of people here have used the 32/36, I don't know if anyone has tried the 34/34. When I got my Weber, the 34/34 came out right after. Had it come out a little sooner, I might have tried it, the ad's look good.

I forgot part of the questions I needed to ask when I posted this, the major question is does anybody know if the Jets for the 32/36 will fit in the 34/34 are all Webers the same as far as jets and emulsion tubes go? Or do you have to order for the specific carburetor? a

thanks for the reply Keith
I didn't know the 34/34 came out after the 32/36, I knew that the 34/34 was made by Solex under a Weber patent but not when. But from what I've read here it might be interesting to come up with one of the 32/32DGEV although I've never seen one for sale.
