Hello, I am the new owner on a 88 SR5 4WD 6 speed Terk with 176,000 Kms.
I am interested in converting the 3A to EFI. For the many benefits of EFI.
Was the 3A ever produced with EFI? Will other Toyota EFI systems work on the 3A? What are my options?
I'm just starting out so you might have to let me in on stuff that might be considered common sense.
Thanks in advance, Guy

Congrats on the tercel!
There was a discussion about this already,

I've been doing quite a bit of reading and there is a lot of great info here. You guys have done a great job accumulating all this.
I have another question. To acheive EFI, would it be possible to transplant the head from an engine that was EFI into the wagon?
A million questions... so little time
Guy

The 4A-FE and 4A-GE are EFI engines and have almost the same block as the 3A-C. I think the heads will fit, but it's better just to change the block as well since it fits right in. The hard part is getting the head to work with the Tercel's engine configuration. The exhaust will come out on the other side of the engine.
What about the turbo/super version of the 4A-GE? I think its called either the 4a-GTE or GZE. Just how difficult would it be to change the exhaust routing to the other side or have a downtube that crosses? Plus, what would have to be changed to compensate for the power?

I see your point of view in changing the whole block (engine). I guess I see my 3A as having a lot of life left and if it can be EFI'd with a head from an "E" engine then I'm in with less cost than a whole engine.
Plus, I think it would be cool to say I have a EFI 3A.
My hope is to rob a donor car of what I need from a wrecking yard for way less then they would want for a whole motor, maybe I'm wrong.
I am also aware that the heads from "E" engine have the exhaust on the other side. And with all the good info here I can see that it's something well within range of doable and affordable.
I'd like to stick with the SOHC and with info from other sites, I've found 2 possible donors. The 4A-E and 4A-ELU.
My next question then is how do I figure out which cars had those engines?
Can anyone foresee other difficulties in transplanting just the head? Pressure ratios? Timing? Heck do the heads even match up? Maybe a check of the gasket part numbers would tell if the heads would bolt up... there I go again thinkin on my own LOL
Thanks, Guy

From all the info on the WWW I think Toyota once produced an engine with the 4A-E designation. I'm not interested in the 4A-FE, it's a DOHC, I want the 4A-E, SOHC.
I want to know how would I find out what cars the 4A-E engine were put into? I can't find a thing on it.
Any ideas? Cross references anywhere? I'm stumped...

I never heard of a 4A-E. The 4A-F DOHC 16 valve engine is newer and it had a carb before they switched to EFI in 1990, and that was after they stopped making the 4A-C. Sure it can be done but it would probably be easier to use the system from a throttle body injection engine or an aftermarket EFI setup. The newer engines all have electronic ignition that works along with the fuel injection, so you would have to set that up with the 4A-C distributor, change the distributor, or make it work without electronic ignition.
Here (France) all the corolla 1.6 were EFI.Pegger wrote: Hello, I am the new owner on a 88 SR5 4WD 6 speed Terk with 176,000 Kms.

100hp with 8 valves
121hp with 16 valves
You could take a whole system from them.
The problem is that it's a pressure-speed managed EFi, so if you use the ECU with a different displacement, the air/fuel ratio will no longer be correct (too rich).
Hornbeam has been put on the back burner AGAIN
. It seems it's either one thing or another that comes up preventing fumes and I from finishing it...
I did find a gas tank for use, I still want a smaller one though to fit under hood.
Things left to do:
* mount new tank
* install fuel pump in tank
* install suzuki efi harness/ computer
Hopefully we will get to this soon... unfortunatly it's cold in my shop this time of the year
For those interested in doing this for your tercels:
The swap is do-able with the existing tank, and lines if an external pump is mounted in the engine bay. the round grommet that is oe to the suziki harness fits perfectly into the oval hole for the ac in the firewall. really the only thing that needs to be fabricated is the adapter plate for the throttle body.
All for now. By the way Fumes computer is down so I deceded to join you forum to update

what about this universal 4 cyl. EFI ?
i just may put a dual DCOE injection system on my 4age, which still aint in, machine shop still has both flywheels.
