My tercel has recently developed a clicking sound in the front end that i hear while accelerating out of a turn. I dont have my power steering belt attached (and haven't for years)
I was wondering if I could get any help diagnosing the problem before I take it to a mechanic.
Thanks
E

that is an easy one, it is the CV joint.
Rebuilt ones are known to develop clicking, even new units can do it as they wear out. You likely can drive it a lot more before they start thumping and bumping in an accelerating turn. Even than it has to get pretty severe before they are at risk of failing. Though they can fail all at once, they usually wear out slowly starting with the clicking and slowing get progressively worse. Mine have been thumping in the turns for about a year, they have about 100k miles on them. I have no plans to change them anytime soon.

I concur! Most likely an outer CV joint going.

When it comes to replacing a worn out CV joint, how difficult of an endeavor are we talking about here? The FSM shows that a fair amount of special tools are required so I'm a bit concerned.

I just did the left front axle in mine, it was pretty easy, took about an hour... No special tools involved.

As teranfirbt mentions - it is not hard.
I had to borrow a 30mm socket from AutoZone for the axle nut (and then the higher-range torque wrench), but that was it. Once the steering knuckle is moved out of the way, you can pop the axle out with a good crowbar that is not blunted. I used this Stanley tool instead - http://www.homedepot.com/Tools-Hardware ... ogId=10053
DO read up on installation of the seal at the transmission case - it is important to get it seated accurately. I did not get one of mine quite right and it did leak. I do not think there is a loaner tool for this; I made mine out of a piece of pipe - see http://www.tercel4wd.com/forums/viewtop ... ipe#p34235

I've done so many front axles that I can do a re and re in under 30 minutes now. It's fairly easy if you know the tricks...like disconnecting the lower arm and prying down to pull the old axle out. CHanging the seal is a great idea while you are in there as well.
