low fuel light on all the time

Post by simon84 »

my low fuel light is on and seems to be stuck.
Sometimes its brightness fluctuates but it is on steadily.
I don't really care that much but I'm wondering if this is something I may want to look at fixing. Could it indicate other problems. The car sits sometimes for a week or so. condensation maybe in the tank? Otherwise it's running fine.
any ideas?

this is operated by a separate wire from the sender (next to the level indicator sender in the tank). If the wire is chaffed or grounded it will stay on. Pull back the carpet over the tank and inspect the wires. Determine which one is the low fuel lite and unplug it. if it goes off than the problem is in the sender. The sender is accessible without removing the tank, you have to remove the little hatch and than remove the sender on the top of the tank.

Some people have had good luck in cleaning out the sender with carb cleaner, if that does not work you have to replace it, or just leave the wire disconnected. Mine does not work, and cleaning did not help, but it does not harm anything at all.

Good luck

ya same thing happened to me, i phoned the toyota dealership about a new sending unit with the fuel light but it was like $260CAD out of California if I remember correctly so i didnt bother and then about 6 months later the fuel light went off so i assumed the bulb finally burnt out, but turns out the fuel light indicator thing must have fixed itself. and it continues to work every time it gets to the low point fuel light comes on, goes off when you fill so im happy!

Thanks for the tips.
I will look at the wiring under the carpet and see whats what. I don't care too much about fixing it, but shutting it off would be a start.

Actually your light is working properly, it has been running on 1 gallon of gas for weeks. You have an extremely rare Canadian model equipped with the ultra mpg "extreme fuel vaporizer" carbs invented in the '70's.

Must have a natural gas leak in here....
It's a scientific fact that in a twin engine aircraft, when one engine fails there is always enough power in the remaining engine to make it all the way to the crash site.
