Get drunk ruin engine
My friend's son's Toyota was losing some water so he kept it topped off and continued driving it. One night he got drunk and passed out in the car with the engine idleing. It ran till it overheated and crapped out. Then the car sat for half a year. He pulled the head and asked me to look at it. The head was warped but what really looked bad was the cylinders. I was expecting shiny steel but all cylinders were coated with a rusty colored film. I took a wire brush to one and it removed the film but the metal was dull colored and still felt a bit rough. I wonder if this is worth fixing?
Love those Tercell 4x4 wagons but they sure suffer from road noise.

That is what happens when you let a engine with water in cyl. sit too long.
Which model toy is it? if the head is badly warped it not only needs to be resurfaced, but also the cam shaft re-linebored. If not so bad it only needs a resurface. See if the cam turns freely in the cam bore.
If the engine is not too many miles on it you can try brush honing each cyl from the top with the piston at bottom of the stroke. Make sure you clean it out real good with solvent and compressed air. I have done this when I did not want to tear the whole engine down. Works okay, but if the rings and cyl are well worn, it still will burn oil.

To be honest I wouldn't worry about the dull color. And even if pitted it might be ok if the pits are small and not inter-connected. Given the oxidation I'd definitely check the bearings though. The worrying thing is falling asleep drunk with a running engine

Maybe start by fixing the kid???
Reminds me of a cousin who boasted about waking up in the ditch, car still running and in drive!
Rusted rings need to be considered. If the bore is rusted it's safe to say the rings are too. Can the pistons still be moved around the bore side to side slightly? This will tell you if the rings are still floating in their grooves. Best thing for the rust will be boring and oversize pistons.
Sounds like full rebuild or replace to me. The latter usually being the cheapest way, especially if the head might be beyond repair.

it would be cheaper to buy ANY BEATER TERCEL with 3A for $ 100.00(-/+),test and drive, idle for 1/2 hrs , if no overheat and smoking ,then perfect, just swap it .
