My brakes !!!

Post by blade »

hi everyone i need some help my car is now on the road and after its wait the brakes on the front are sticking :( . i drove it in to town today and all of a suden there was a nasty smell coming from the front or the car and there was a tone of smoke so i pulled over and found the brakes to be smokeing and so i calld my parents so thay came out and found the front brakes to be sticking. So i slowly drove it home and we thought it was the sliders (where the bolts hold the caliper in the peaces that slide) thay wher seazed so we freed them up and took the car out to see if we fixed the problem but no luck  so that is where we are and the rotors are worped no so we have bought new ones and will put them on when we figure it out so if you could help me and hopefully we can get this fixed thanks.

my ford f150 has had that problem four times in the last 80,000 miles. i have had to replace the calipers every time.
has something to do with the pistons. i rarely drive the thing so it just sits. probably water in the brake lines messing with the piston. but calipers are reasonably cheap so i just replace 'em
Love those Tercell 4x4 wagons but they sure suffer from road noise.

sometimes the calipers get corrosion in the piston and cause that, some times a bad flex hose brake line can causit ( the flex hose liner falls appart and than acts like an in-line check valve). You have to get rebuilt calipers, or fix them yhourself with rebuild kit, and replace the flex houses (they do not cost much). I would chekc the calipers first,

Nothing improper added to the reservoir? Contamination will cause this too. Any petroleum product will swell up all the rubber in the system. Fluid can be forced to the brakes but not returned. Drag go away if the bleeder is opened? If so you have pressure getting trapped. Most likely by a brake hose. Confirmation can be done by loosening line fittings starting at the hose. If drag goes away with the bleeder screw but not steel line/hose union you have it narrowed down to the hose.

Contamination is very easy to diagnose. Take a sample of your brake fluid and put it in a cup of clean water. Brake fluid will mix with the water. If there are any floating globules you are in big trouble. OK not big, this is an old terc with very affordable parts . But EVERYTHING in the system with rubber should be replaced when this happens. On a newer ABS equiped car, it could be as costly as an engine or trans job. Power steering fluid is the usual culprit but I have seen ATF once or twice. Also, all but one of the contam's I've seen(10-15 of them) were mopar products. One Chev. Does this say anything about mopar owners? I'll let you decide...

Car sitting how long? Can the piston's be pushed back? Carefully pull the caliper piston dust boot and see if the piston is all rusted. I have yet to have a bad caliper on any of my T4's. Torn pin boots/rusted pins has been my worst problems. Make sure the pads aren't seized into the bracket too. Usually doesn't lock them up but can cause drag/uneven wear or even prevent application.

IF it is contaminated make sure to flush the steel lines out with plenty of brakeclean and compressed air before you hang new parts.

Once, on a motorcycle, I had a pressure building problem in the front brakes. It turned out to be rusty dirt in the master was not allowing the piston to fully return and let fluid back up..

Mine was sitting for awhile and ended up having a stuck piston on the right caliper, I just rebuilt them both myself... Rock Auto has (had?) a complete rebuild kit for both sides for ~$10.

what exactly broke in half
the shaft?
i'm wondering what else might be wrong to cause that
like no oil getting up there?

so i did get my money back because it was a factory defalt so i got all of the money back and the new one i didn't have to pay for, so it is all together now and just have to do some final tweaking and it should be ready to go.
