want to buy: TVSV

Post by brian_wildcard »

Hi, I'm new to this forum.
Found this place to be a lot more informative regarding my 4ac engine compared to club4ag.

anyways, i had an AAP diaphragm leak on my carburetor for a little while..
i've already replaced the part hoping to fix the hesitation with the engine cold.
Turns out the TVSV isn't working either, must have had let too much gas go into it before i plugged up the vacuum line.

been doing some reading/searching around the forums... the TVSV is the same for AE86 and tercels

Does anyone here have a spare TVSV that they are willing to sell? (preferably living in the BC lower mainland)
Also, is it possible to clean the TVSV out?
port N still recieves vaccuum when cold but it is very weak.

thanks in advance!

Welcome! Thanks for the good words!
It's a bit off-topic, but you might need it...the OE part number for the TVSV is 90925-02076. The current price from Butler Toy in Indianapolis is USD $91.72.

P.S. I thought there was a Club 4AC, but apparently the one you mentioned has taken over?

thanks for the warm welcome!
oh, I have already copied the part # down when i was doing my research. thanks though

actually, to my knowledge, club4ag was created before club4ac..
the former is specialized around the AE86 GTS which uses the 4AG fuel injected engines.
i think a member called "shane" created the club4ac forums just as a joke,
but it turned out there were enough ppl like me with SR5 models (4ac engine) to keep the forum up and running.
either way, club4ac (the new name was toyota-powered.com) went offline about 2 weeks ago, didn't know the reason why though. :(

edit: just checked, someone created another 4ac website TODAY. what a coincidence.

actually, i might take this chance share the analysis of my car's symptoms.

as some of you might have experienced... it is this annoying little hesitation which happens when i accelerate from a stop/rolling stop with the engine cold. sometimes if i really step hard on the pedal it would stall the engine
the WEIRD part is, there is no hesitation when the engine is still very cold (i.e. it has just been started up)
the problems occurs most frequently just before the carburetor off the automatic choke.

So today i did a check on the AAP system by pulling the vacuum line off the diaphragm when the engine is still on fast idle.
as i have read on the forums here/somehwere, if the system works correctly should be a shot of fuel from the jet in the carb

there was a TINY bit of fuel coming out. (vacuum was very weak, and died out as the engine got warmer)
i did a "control" experiement by connecting the vaccuum from port K directly to the AAP...
and the shot of fuel was at least 5 times as much as if I had the vacuum come normally through the TVSV.

this leads me to believe my TVSV is either too old, or is gummed up with sticky gas deposits.
i have yet to do the temperature check on the part though
do you guys think a faulty TVSV would be sufficient enough to lead to a cold hesitation?
(i have read that some ppl are able to disable the AAP system without side effects)

thanks, and sorry for the long post... i am eager to try and rid of the problem
(i'll move this thread to the repair section if needed)

I repaired mine a good while back...still works. Could be you have a crack in the base...or a vac leak in one of the vac lines...or mis-routed vac lines?

takza:
good thinking, it didn't occur to me that there could be a crack on the valve.
if i have time later i'll pull it out and check it

tough tercel:
thanks. i'll check the valve first to see if it can be repaired.
check this diagram, it has the TVSV labelled on it with number 23271.

btw.. this site is a great resource for diagrams (credit to the guys at club4ag for the link)

WOW !
That parts source link is phenomenal! I'm going to make it a sticky here! I inserted Goldie's VIN and went from there!
Thanks!
Also - TVSV means Thermostatic Vacuum Switching Valve.

ARCHINSTL: i'm glad you're enjoying it :D

i checked it when i got home today...TVSV wasn't cracked
but the valve was too hot so wasn't able to pull it off for testing
however, i did locate a ruptured vaccuum line way in the back of the engine bay, so i repaired that
i'll see how it runs tonight...

toughtercel: do u happen to have the following part?
"23265 FILTER, GAS, NO.1" from the diagram
http://www.toyodiy.com/parts/p_U_1986_T ... 708.6.html
my mechanic broke it back in december, so he had to re-route some of the vacuum lines.

p.s. anyone have an idea what it does?? the name is sure confusing, coz i know thats not the same as the "fuel filter".
thx

hey sorry for the late reply,
was a bit busy preparing for the vancouver sun run and exams at the same time :P

toughtercel: sending you a PM

unfortunately, the car is still doing that hesitation when cold...

so i finally got to test the TVSV today.. it turned out ok, ports are opening as they should.
however, my mechanic did have all the vacuum lines on the TVSV re-routed
(which he probably did on purpose, as one of the ports on the "gas filter" is broken")
he swapped the vacuum lines on port J(atmospheric port) and port N...
thus, port N is connected to a hole near the mouth of the carburetor ----> not receiving vacuum.

ok... i connected the vacuum lines the way they i saw them on the diagram..
and guess what? the speedometer malfunctions.

TVSV ports: http://www.tercel4wd.com/forums/viewtop ... &sk=t&sd=a

last thing i checked today was the vacuum port that is connected to port N on the diagram.... no vacuum coming from it
tried blowing air into it (both lines to vacuum source disconnected), but air doesn't go through
anyone know if this port gets vacuum from the vacuum source in the back of the engine?
or is it from somewhere else?

thanks

Brian,

Not sure if I followed this correctly but if you are talking about the "gas filter" in the intake manifold - I think it is a vacuum source for the TSVS. Some have one port and some two. If the port is broken it might be a manifold air leak, but I found that the "gas filter" on my car was clogged and not passing any vacuum from the intake at all. Might check that.

Good Luck.

hi sdoan,
yes, that's exactly the part i'm talking about

my mechanic actually plugged up the broken port with a screw.. :?
if that part is a source for the TVSV,
then yes it could be a reason why port N wasn't getting any vaccuum.

those metallic "vaccumm lines" are all bundled together so it's very hard to trace which port leads to which

There is the FSM available here; it has the vac diagams for all models - incl. Canadian cars, if that is what you have. The color sticky I made up in the Repair Guides section is for USA Federal cars, alas.
