Cruise Control for an "85
Hi
I have always thought cruise control would be great! I have noticed some cars, especially from California, with the feature. There is a mention in the 85 of the accessory.
I saw an 85 corolla with cruise and grabbed all the parts off of it that were cruise related. Unfortunately, it is not a direct insertion.
Does anyone have this accessory? If you do what is the setup? I see the holes for the cruise mounts, but then something else (battery, washer fluid) are in the way.
Are there pictures out there?
Cheers

I have cruise control on my 83 4x4 SR5 wagon. I do not know if it is factory installed or aftermarket. It does not work and I have not taken the time to figure out why. All the components seem to be in place. The linkage seems too loose at the Carb and possibly just needs some adjusting. On the steering column the controller attaches to the turn signal switch.

JC Whitney has a kit for the Tercels. You can get a Vacuum or Electrical setup

Do you know what vehicle/year this came from? I'd be really interested in swapping in fully intermittent wipers for my car. (It's a must on the north west coast.)dug320 wrote: I picked up a brand turn signal cluster off of ebay for 25 bucks. I love the adjustable time delay on the intermittent wipers. It was a direct swap. Now I am trying to figure out the cruise connections.

Good to know, thanks! (Must be off a fwd Corolla? I know the rwd Corolla SR5 and GTS did not come with adjustable intermittant wiper control).dug320 wrote: Intermittent wipers came off of a '85 Corolla. I think 84-86 are all the same. The cross over was easy and everthing fit exact.

I picked up a dealer-installed cruise kit at the junkyard. It's specifically made for Tercels, and the switch mounts into a hole behind a snap-in plate to the right of the steering column. The vacuum servo for the cruise mounts under the dash, and works the throttle through a bracket that bolts above the pedal. There's a short adaptor harness that goes under the steering column and lets you tap into power without cutting the harness. There's a speed sensor that screws into the speedo cable, and the cancel is via vacuum switches actuated with the brake and clutch pedals.
I'd seen a few of these setups in the past, but never thought to look under the dash for the servo.
BTW, I also added intermittent wipers using a FWD Corolla switch cluster. It's a direct plug-in. It's a single-speed intermittent setting, which works well for misting situations.

My '85 has factory-installed cruise control, but has not worked since I've had the car. I haven't taken the time to dig into it and diagnose the problem. Any suggestions on where I should start ??

The cruise has it's own diagnostic system! It gives codes through the light on the dash switch. The procedures are in the FSM. As to what's wrong with it, I would look at the actuator if the computer doesn't give you any error codes. You can check it for resistance and there may be a chance that it's mechanically seized from lack of use. Check the vacuum line going to the actuator first. I've heard of these being unplugged and thus causing the cruise not to wo rk.
