I use to shy away from using any type of vaseline on rubber products. Thats what I remember hearing too...
Then talking with this engineer one day this subject came up and he told me that most all rubbers made nowadays are petoleum based - so its not really an issue.

His words. I did follow up with a little reading on how they make rubber, and I did in fact read that they use oil to make it.. Something about synthetic rubber if I remember correctly...
