Bypass Hose o-ring!
I've tried several times to download the service manual. Tried Toyota, they try to sell me some rubber hose.?. Went to several hardware stores. Even purchased an entire o-ring drawer from Fastenal. In my defense, it's a good thing to have around anyway. My o-ring on the steel bypass tube that comes out of the thermostat housing and slides up into the water inlet housing needs replacing. I've had this thing apart so many times trying different ones that I'm biting the bullet and admitting complete failure. Does anyone know or have the Toyota part number for this thing?! It seems as though back in the day of making these cars that this o-ring is the only one in that size in existence! AARRRGGHHHH!

Re: Bypass Hose o-ring!
I've had the same failure and found a replacement O-ring size that works from a "variety pack", like your Fastenal. I slathered it in silicone and it's held for 6 months so far. I can send you the PN of the ring kit or a couple of rings... they'll probably fit in an envelope. -Alex

I bought mine at AutoZone. You need the original, they will match it from a box of O rings they keep behind the counter.

Re: Bypass Hose o-ring!
I have actually reused the old ones a number of times, as long as they were not damaged. If they are hard and stiff, but not broken, I have smeared them with the blue RTV silicone sealant and put them back. The only time I have ever had a leak was when I damaged one on installation. I do not know why they work so good, but they have never leaked on me unless it was damaged. I think with 3 overhauls, and 4 head removals over the years (and 3 different Tercels) I have only put new ones in once from the rebuild kit.

Re: Bypass Hose o-ring!
An o-ring has 2 measurements...the OD and the diameter or thickness of the "band" part. They can be stretched some, but not a lot...it's the thickness that is probably most important. Too thick and it won't fit...too thin and it leaks.
Use some 400 grit paper to clean up both the steel and alum without removing any metal. Use some silicone. I did mine maybe 4 yrs ago and it's still holding.

Re: Bypass Hose o-ring!
If you plan to keep your Terc for awhile you might want to consider getting an engine gasket kit. It has every seal/o-ring that is in your engine. They are available from just about any of the major local parts sources (Autozone, O'Reilly, Checker, etc.) and you will wind up saving money in the long run. I got mine from AZ for about 50 bucks and I wish I would have done the same when I did a motor swap on my old BMW a few months back.
The coolest part is that you have everything at your fingertips when you need it, no need to run to the parts store when it's late at night and you're all greasy. I replaced the coolant o-ring mentioned above - when I bought the gasket kit I didn't even know there was an o-ring in there. If you purchase everything separately you would wind up spending 5 times as much.

It's a scientific fact that in a twin engine aircraft, when one engine fails there is always enough power in the remaining engine to make it all the way to the crash site.

Re: Bypass Hose o-ring!
If you are any sort of tinkerer, one of those $10-15 assortments in the red clamshell case is well worth your while. Harbor Freight is probably the easiest place to find them. Anybody that carries ATD tools as well. It has saved me numerous trips to the hardware store. I have had no trouble using ones from the kit for my bypass pipe too.
If you wanted to upgrade, the green A/C type o-rings are higher quality. Those might be harder to match up though. My small green kit doesn't have the right size and the next larger size assortment available is $100. The everything kit is over 300. Ouch!
Did you check for corrosion? Both my waterpump housings and water outlets had pits. My 84 was so corroded and stuck together I thought the pipe was cast into the two at first! A good clean up and high quality silcone is needed if it's pitted. Right Stuff is the only type I use. No matter what you use make sure it's clean and DRY before assembly. New orings can have a residue, so clean those too.
When all the o-ring surfaces are good on a pipe type joint, vaseline is what I assemble with. Sealant is a last resort as the bypass rings are supposed to "float" in their groove very slightly. Flange mounted o-rings, like waterpump housing to block for example, I will always back them up with right stuff.

Re: Bypass Hose o-ring!
This might be kind of a "picking flysh-t out of the pepper" kind of remark, so please don't take it the wrong way...vaseline is a petroleum product, so wouldn't that degrade the rubber O-ring over time (if, indeed, it is real rubber)?splatterdog wrote:When all the o-ring surfaces are good on a pipe type joint, vaseline is what I assemble with. Re: Bypass Hose o-ring!
Not a bad question. I haven't seen any signs of degradation. Vaseline is nothing like a true lubricant. You can put it on your lips(not that I do). I remember reading once that the inventor or company pres long ago ate some everyday even. yuck! It does however provide more lubricity than water or coolant as an assembly lube. A tear or nick in the rubber concerns me more. Running temp pretty much melts off any excess too.

Re: Bypass Hose o-ring!
Wow is that google ad bar good! Anybody see the marcorubber.com link?http://www.marcorubber.com/orings.htm
Lots of info. Just learned the name of an inadequate lube installation problem off their failure analysis page. "spiral failure". I have seen this before, just didn't know it had a name.
Also, the cheap orings in my kit I have are buna type, which on their application chart is recommended for contact with most petrloeum oils.http://www.marcorubber.com/material_chart.htm
