A friend of mine came up with an idea of putting a "Safari Rack" on the top of the tercel with a spare mounted inside, accompanied by a rescue shovel and a jack of some sort even... perhaps a Hi-lift, just for laughs..

Pretty much like this: http://www.kargomaster.com/files/031102_A12.jpg

I have one of those Safari baskets! It is the whole length of roof with the extension installed. I have 2 large lights on the front and 2 smaller ones on the back. I am just waiting for the low profile gutter-roof rack. Speaking of which, does anyone know of a good brand/style? i want it to be fairly low to reduce the wind resistance as the basket is 4" high.

snapped some pics this weekend of the tercel with is basket on.

I picked up some large ammo cans at the gun show and plan on making them into a tool box for ropes and what not. I also want to mount the tire up there.

Here are the pics

Look great! Which roof racks are those? They look like Yakima's. I like the doubling up of them to get more crap on the roof!

Did you make the side walls of it yourself? that looks really nice man. if you could get some close up pictures that would be much appreciated. I tried making one out of some old gutter mounted clamp-style snowboard racks but they whistle REALLY loud when going fast and it gets annoying.

This plus to them besides getting looks: sounded like a supercharger. haha

Yeah the rack is a Yakima. and i found the basket at the junk yard. I've been wanting to build one for a while. but the one from the junk yard was perfect. i bolted it to the Yakima rails. they do whistle, you have to keep the covers on the ends. sadly these covers are plastic and sitting in the sun they tend to get brittle and end up falling off. I've tried to used the rubber caps you put on the legs of a card table but they only last a few weeks in the sun. since the Yakima racks rails are round I'm thinking of replacing them with some steel pipe and get some screw on end caps. the rails are slightly larger then an inch. they are an inch of pipe but coated in rubber. so I'm thinking of getting some 3/4 inch coated steel pipe. its got the correct outside diameter, only its green. but nothing spray paint can't fix.

Some of my customers who had Yak racks used to stick crutch tips on the ends of the bars. Did you try that?
