Does anyone have a hood?

Post by scotisha »

The gf had a little fender-bender and dented the right hood and probably broke some of the stuff behind the light (the sealed beam is broken but the light still works). I think that there is no frame damage (wait until the daylight for that one) so it shouldn't be took much to fix. Good thing too because the cargo basket just arrived and I was just about to mount some lights on it.

So does anyone have a hood that won't cost more than the tercel to ship to northern Alberta? I have found one in Vancouver for $95 and I don't know how much shipping will be.

Oh and she is all right, I think she must have been going 20 km/h. Gotta love the freezing rain :). Too bad I don't have a steel bumper like synthdesigns :(

I recently got into a fender bender too, my brakes have been shit, and I hadn't bothered to fix them. I fixed them immediately after the bender. The passenger side of the hood is a lil bend, fender is a lil messed up, and that blinker broke. Otherwise it was fine.

There's two in the pick-a-part at Calgary...

I can ask a buddy of mine to look in Edmonton for you... he goes to there yards fairly often.

I have a "spare" hood, but I think shipping something as large and easily damaged as a hood might cost way more than it is worth.

I suggest trying the local self service wrecking yards first, and then the others. Local supply will be your best bet, and allow you to look it over before you actually commit to buying it.

Another option, which I have done to good effect, is find a local junker (non-running, rust bucket, etc.) cheap (I have found running ones for $100). Go look at it first, and then tow it home and take what you want off of it. I suggest taking a lot of whatever you think you are going to need off of it, and then some. Than tow the hulk to a scrap dealer where you will likely get about $50 for in scrap. It is a lot of work, but presuming you have a place to keep the parts, you get quite a bargin. The last "parts" car I bought for $100 got me (so far) $450 worth of parts I have actually used over the last two years (that is at wrecking yard prices, plus the scrap value). I only needed the transmission at the time, but ended up using the tires, engine, the clutch, and a few other parts from it, in addition to the transmission. And I still have a few more useful parts in my garage too.

Craigs list is a good place to start, but I found mine just sitting in a yard with the weeds growing through it. I found the owner and made him an offer, he was happy to take the money. It needed a radiator and a battery, but was other wise drivable. The body and interior was a wreck, but oddly the bumpers and the hood were still good, as was all the mechanical parts. So keep your eye open in your area for these cars sitting around in people's back yards, side lots, etc.

While I DO NOT know if it's true, I believe someone here mentioned that pickups of the same era used the same hood.

Luckily I haven't gotten those corners yet. They were sent to Victroia by mistake and they are one their way up here now.

The gf went out and got some quotes today. One was $5000 and the other was $2500  What a crock of s**t! That is what you get for living in the land of overpricing. I am going to look at the quotes to see what needs to be done and do it myself. It can't be that hard to fix and if it looks bad so be it! I was planning on doing the tremclad paint job in the spring so now I really have to. I am going to look at it this weekend during the 3 hours of daylight that we have.

Hey Albertabeef what is the name of that pick-a-part in Calgary? and that would be sweet if you could ask your friend if he has seen any terc's in Edmonton. I searched that car-part website and they only have hoods in the lower mainland and Manitoba. Also what is the scoop on that Tercel that you saw that had some low km's? You going to grab it? Maybe I can pawn my beast off on a friend for cheap and get a 'new' one.

I wish that I had room for a parts car. If only I had an acreage...

Does anyone know if this is true?

Thanks for all the help guys!

It's the Calgary "Pick N Pull" on Barlow Trail South. I'll head there tomorrow and see what's still there. What colour are you looking for, if I can find one?

I'll ask my buddy up in Edmonton to look. See what he can find.

And yes, I'm trying to buy the one I saw for a grand, but have to sell an old Corolla first... =)

Thanks! It is that pale blueish colour. Same as my avatar pic. I will give them a call tomorrow as well. I got the parts list and I am gonna see what is out there.

...and good luck with the purchase. It sounds like a nice one, have you taken it for a test drive?

I am also looking for a hood in the Duluth,MN area if anyone knows of one around here.

I checked with the U Puller R in East Bethel that is posted on here and the car is no longer in inventory.

the car is grey, but will take any color.

Any tips appreciated!

Thanks, John

Love those Tercell 4x4 wagons but they sure suffer from road noise.
