Wiper relay location?

Post by Highlander »

The Yo d'Or ('85) has no intermittent wipers-the switch position is there, and if you switch from low speed to intermittent, it'll eventually pull back to the park position. THE POS FSM doesn't even tell you where the bloody thing is :x  , much less how to troubleshoot it other than checking the steering column connector (which I've done). Anybody know where it is?

sometimes these are built into the wiper motor, that is the case with my Wife's Mazda. When the intermittent position stopped working on the Mazda, I took the lever all apart and checked all the contacts, all fine. I got a new wiper motor at a pull-a-part for a few $ and put it in, problem solved.

See if the same wires coming out of the lever go into the wiper motor. You might also follow the wires in the factory wire diagram, it will sometimes hint at the physical location of the relay.

If it is built into the motor, just replace the motor. These are pretty reliable and rarely fail so I would feel safe using a wrecking yard for a replacement.

Do a Search for "intermittent."
There are a number of different threads addressing this back in '05 and '06. Mine has the same problem.
It seems that this problem is simply from wear in the column switch itself.
There were a number of photos of the disassembled switch from brianp (still an active member), but they have been deleted by ?.
Very helpful discussions, but I have yet to bestir myself to fix Goldie's switch.

Thanks Tom, I'll check out the switch this weekend when I'm doing service on the Yotas. I have the switch from the '83 out but that has the Mist instead of the Intermittent style. Since the wife likes the Mist, maybe if it's bad, I'll do a multi-car round robin and give her the Mist that she likes so much and use the Intermittent on mine.
This weekend should be fun, I'll be putting the right side axle from the Yota into the SR5, Oil Change and Timing belt on the YoTrois (wife's), Thermostat on the Yo d'Or, putting the snows on the SR5, and putting away all of the highway tires in the basement. OH, and dinking around with the wiper switches and rear wipers on Yota, Yo d'Or and YoTrois  ; Plus whatever the wife's got planned---I need a beer  maybe more
