Anyone willing to part with a tranny?
I started my clutch job and saw that my input shaft was stripped. <sigh>. So, anyone in the Western North Carolina area have a transmission they'd be willing to part with?

Re: Anyone willing to part with a tranny?
Have you tried a junk yard, more particularly the pull your own parts variety ?? I know there is a Pull-A-Part in Knoxville, and I believe there's one in Charlotte, also. I've probably pulled 4-5 trannies from there, all I have to do now is get around to rebuilding them. The one in my '86 now is from there, and there was nothing wrong with it....runs and shifts like a champ !

I wish oregon junkyards were more stupid..most of them want 450 dollars for a tercel tranny.
They hear 6 speed and BAM, price shoots up.

Re: Anyone willing to part with a tranny?
I've called every junkyard I can find in my area and I've only found one so far. He wants 400 dollars for it, and he says that its from a car that he actually drove and the only reason that he put it in his yard is because it started smoking...
I'm going to talk to a few transmission shops today, too, and see what they can do about rebuilding mine for me.

It'll be well over 400 dollars to rebuild the transmission...maybe closer to 1000 dollars. But you'll have a nice rebuilt tranny, it may be worth it.

So I did find a used for for 250 dollars, the salvage yard just can't find it. Evidently they have it buried somewhere. And the old tranny was dropped off at a shop but the rebuilder said that he could tell the gears are burnt, which isn't a good sign I suppose. We'll see what's next...

Ha! At 250 a pop I'm not sure about that. Your tax dollars pays me alright, but not that well! But I did go get it, seems like its solid. I suppose I won't know for sure until I get it in there.

Re: Anyone willing to part with a tranny?
hope you get a good one !! i'm curious how many of these cars are around your area. we took my son to a cross country camp in Boone at Appalacian State back when he was in high school, and saw a few in that area. I would think up in the mountains there'd be more of them than in a place like Nashville.

You know, I see a few a week usually but I was surprised there were not more terks in the salvage yards. Or it was just that their transmissions were already gone.

Re: Anyone willing to part with a tranny?
Henry- If the input shaft is stripped (as you said in the first post) then why not just get the input shaft form a toasted tranny? it comes out with 4 bolts from the trans side of the bell housing. Though I'm not sure what you mean by the input shaft being stripped BTW I do have an '83 trans in good shape with ~365K miles on it.

Re: Anyone willing to part with a tranny?
Well the input shaft was stripped... along with the main cluster gear... so its a junker all together. But this new tranny I got (and hopefully one of these days I'll actually get back into the car) feels much more solid than the old one does anyway... so I'm just going to use it.
