What else to replace when doing clutch?
Tomorrow I'm going to attempt to replace my clutch. First time I've done something as big as that so I'm guessing its going to be an all day job. My question is, what else should I replace while I'm under there? I already have the clutch kit ordered, but I imagine that I'd need new gaskets to go with it... what are the names of them? Also, should I look at replacing the CV shafts seeing they are coming out anyway?
Re: What else to replace when doing clutch?
The CV's wouldn't be a bad thought. Don't remember where people have been getting them... Want NEW ones, not reman.
New rear main seal wouldn't be a bad idea.
If you are dropping the tranny, not lifting the engine, I dunno what else to suggest. Maybe a new tranny mount.

Also defiantly change the throwout bearings I think that is what they are called. (sorry in a rush this morn) can anyone else eleborate? I didn't on my old Terc and it made a terrible noise after I just got the clutch done.

The kits usually have everything except a new cable. You may find that you will need one. Some kits come with a pilot tool, otherwise a plastic one costs about $2. Look up clutch trick in the repair area and the trick of using grease to pull the pilot bearing. Wish I had known that one.

Well, it looks like my transmission is shot. I pulled out the input shaft it it was stripped bare, as well as the what I could see from inside the case.
SO, anyone have a transmission laying around in the western North Carolina area?

Re: What else to replace when doing clutch?
if it is just the input shaft that is damaged, that is an easy replacement. I have a shot tranny but the input shaft is good. It comes out by removing the little plate that is just opposite (in back) the input shaft on the bell housing. I can pull it out and ship it to you if you want, though I am at the other end of the country than you. See if you can find a local one.
You might also consider replacing the rear main seal. If the you have one with more than 100k miles, it might be worth doing. YOu have to pull the flywheel off. While the flywheel is off you should have it resurfaced anyway, and if you want improve throttle response have it lightened at the machine shop and rebalanced with the new clutch cover. You can machine off the large rib on the back of the flywheel just inside the ring gear.
Good luck.

Re: What else to replace when doing clutch?
My plan was to do the real main seal while I was in there. a 14 dollar gasket from Advance is worth not having to do it again. And I pulled the shaft out, thats how I saw that it was stripped, as well as the gear under it in the tranny. :/
I've called every junkyard in WNC, so far only two have said they might have it, but they have to call back first.

Which... speaking of used parts, has anyone ever tried just taking two or three transmissions and making a good one out of them?

Re: What else to replace when doing clutch?
I got a new tranny! 250 from a junkyard and it feels like it works good, shifts good. It came with covers over the CV joint holes so I'm taking that as a good sign. I'm not even sure if the clutch is bad or not... but I'm going to go ahead and do it seeing im so close and get the flywheel machined and replace the rear main while I'm there. My total investment is going to be around 810 into the car itself, minus the service manual and tools, and hopefully I won't find anything else I'll need to do while I'm in there.
