"Any "A" series motor will bolt right up (to the tranny, not always the motor mounts), but the difficulty in swapping in motors such as a 4A-FE, 4A-GE, or 7A-FE is the EFI requires work on either swapping in the fuel system from the donor car, or fabrication of a custom system, since the factory setup uses an engine mounted low pressure fuel pump for the carbureted engines. You'll also need to get the ECU and all the wiring from the donor car. thats all i heard about , bolt right up just need a donor car and have the exhaust fabricated......NOT

im back to working on the tercel. i had way to many projects going on so i am selling the other stuff and finishing the tercel. im at a point i am confused, how the heck do i mate the 4ag to the tercel transmission? the 4ag flywheel is a lot bigger than the 3ac's, it wont fit in the bell housing i looked at shaving the inside of the housing and its to much. the top of the flywheel will fit but the bottom of the bell housing needs a lot more room. im at a loss of my options at this point. im clueless, someone please help..hahaha 20valve, didnt you do this before?

can the bellhousing come off? the bell housing is aluminum, a pro has to wield on it. the exact problem im seeing is the part of the bell housing that has to be shaved down is the bottom where the part of the trans goes to the front wheel drive axles.

little bit more looksee and i can use the same flywheel off the 3ac engine. i just have to swap the hole contraption that the flywheel bolts on. they look identical.

On the 4A-GE flywheel, the ring gear is bigger than the rest of it. I had someone on the internet measure one for me, and he said it was something like 10 inches 'without the ring gear', and it was smaller than what I measured of the Tercel's bellhousing.

I had an idea to remove the 4A-GE flywheel's ring gear, machine down the edge of the flywheel and then cut off the Tercel's ring gear and press it on to the 4A-GE flywheel. If you take the 2 flywheels and ask some smaller machine shops, someone might be able to do it for a reasonable price.

3A,I used to do that at Tilten Engineering about 20 years ago.I would get a machined(lath) alum~body from the machinest,heat the ring~gear up for a couple minutes with a gas torch and slip the ring~gear on.I would then drill and tap(I think 8-1/8")holes right where the alum and steel meet.Last I would lock~tite allenhead pan~screws(hardend)and call~it~good.

i took both flywheels (3ac and 4age) to a shop to have the 4age flywheel cut down and the ring gear off the 3ac put on it. not only is the 3ac flywheel a 1/4 inch thicker, but the ring gear is positioned differently on the flywheel...hope this thing works. once i put the clutch on hopefully the throw-out bearing will work or i will have to put in a 1/4 inch spacer.... this swap is more difficult than i thought... but i am going to keep at it till i get it.

What was the end result of the machine shop work? Did it work?

just get the your flywheel re-indexed!! new holes in the old fly. It will work fine.

I know...trust me!!!
