yaris motor swap

Post by toastyjosh »

I have been finding a lot of JDM and USDM yaris 1.5 motors on ebay lately. Would one of those motors fit? There would be a ton of wiring most likely and trans wise would the stock yaris 5 speed work or could you mate the tercel 6 speed somehow? Or is this just a pipe dream.

Complete dream I'm saying. I dont see how you could keep the 6speed 4wd tranny and put that kind of an engine into it, it's probably completely different, since the yaris is front wheel drive.

Yeh, but i think it'd be too much work for what you're trying to do.

ok, thanks just kind of thinking out loud. After looking at the yaris motor closer figured this would be pretty hard to to. oh well. Any on know of a diesel motor that would fit in to the tercel?

Just get an 80's Landcruiser. They have tough diesels, 4by4 and it's an 80's Toyota

I believe the yaris has a distributorless ignition, so you would not have the distributor problem. I wonder if the head will bolt on, that might work. You could go to EFI, distribuorless ignition and more modern head if you can get it to work.

thats what i was thinking when i picked up an echo engine (same thing, 1nzfe) but after close inspection, it quickly became apparent that it would be no easy task, bolting it to the transmission is going to be your first hurdle, then the starter, engine mounts, etc.

the wiring will be the easiest, its not a very sophisticated system and it would be easy to isolate the engine wiring from the tercels existing system. besides, that engine isn't very good, a 20V silvertop is a way better engine and could be installed quite easily, buy a water pump conversion for the AE-86 swap (eliminated needing space behind the engine and gives you perfect placement for the rad hoses) and all you have to worry about is theflywheel (get a shop to worry about that) exaust (run a pipe under the engine) then wire it up.

The distributor was always my big worry. You have to bang up the firewall for the ae86 to clear the factory distributor. It is against the rules to cut a firewall on a drift car unfortunately .

I'm curious if the 1nzfe even turns the same way a 3ac does. I know from being a x-honda guy i wanted to put a k series into a ae86 with a custom transmission adapter but the engine rotated the opposite of the 4ac LOL

Honda's, old VW's and Corvair's are the only engines that I know of that turn the "wrong way".

Before I found a good 4AC to swap into my 86 SR5 I put some time and research into diesels. The one that looked good was the Isuzu which as it turns out is about the biggest diesel maker in the world from marine to industrial as well as commercial trucks. Sadly after many emails and phone calls I dead ended and lost interest.

Probably a good thing since it is pretty simple and inexpensive to update and repair items that the factory engineers with computer assisted designs have produced on the Tercel.

Still I don't mean to discourage anyone that wants to take on this kind of challenge. The results could be a really nice operating vehicle.

Isuzu European Opal motor 4EE2-TC 1.7-Liter Diesel Engine
Main Specifications (for Astra & Corsa)
Displacement : 1,686 cc
Max. Output : 55 kW (75 PS)/4,400 rpm = about 73 horsepower
Max. Torque : 165 N-m (16.8 kg-m)/1,800 rpm

The only problem with the diesel would the newly found torque, that'd cause some havoc on the tiny little driveline and axles.

If you could get some large components, and get it to mate to the transmission, it'd be amazing.

Other worry would be space, space for the turbo that is.

yea thanks for the info, I was also looking at the 1.9 liter VW TDI motor, I have seen pics of people putting these in toyota trucks, rangers all sorts of good stuff. So It would be able to at least mount it that way, so custom mounts and wiring. However I have no idea which way it spins so that may be a issue. Anyways more thinking out loud. I am most likely better off just keeping the orginal motor and rebuilding it. I just want good mpg and long life and the 3a has that. sweet thanks :)

If you've seen pictures, then it must turn the right way. The reason that Corvairs and old VW's turned CCW was that they were mounted behind the rear axle and the output shaft was facing forward. I have no Idea why Honda's turn CCW (as viewed from the front of the engine)

Well that would give you 5 speeds and EL in reverse and 1 speed forward with a CCW revolution. If you use just the rear differential and flip it over left to right upside down ....back to normal.
