Major oil leak

Post by packratt »

Did a 4ALC swap and am having problems with a major oil leak

Leaking about 1qt per 5 miles driven.

At the time of swap all gaskets (except head) and seals were replaced. There are signs of valve seals needing replacement but that would not cause the constant flow of oil in the engine compartment.

It appears that the leak is located upper passengerside rear of engine. Leak is worst going up mile of very steep driveway. Is it possible for the fuel pump to leak oil this bad???

Thanks

What do you do for fuel pump gaskets? The parts places don't list them.

They come with replacement oil pumps. Use gasket paper, available in various thicknesses at auto parts stores or good hardware stores. Or clean surfaces and use gasket in a tube.

But leaking 1 qt in 5 miles  sounds like more like a gap than a bad gasket. Something missing or not seated? Broken plastic heat shield under the fuel pump? Also check the valve cover gasket - the cheap Chinese gasket I got was too short for the valve cover and would slip inside the cover while placing it on the head leaving a gap.

Is the PVC system working?

I think a perforated diaphragm can cause the fuel pump to leak oil also, but I wouldn't think 1qt/5miles.

Good luck!

I knew the car was leaking bad but not that bad.

My brother is pretty much homebound and only drives enough to go out and check the PO Box. It wasn't until he mentioned it was taking him 2 quarts for the trip that I found out how bad it was.

Valve cover gaskets were Felpro. I'll replace them again and do the valve seals while I've got it torn apart.

It's been about 3 years since I did the swap but I vaguely remember an issue with the spacer, heatshield, and or gaskets. I was working on something else and a friend was changing the fuel pump from Corolla to Tercell.

I dont think the fuel pump leaking would cause 1qt per 5 miles. That's incredibly bad...

I"m ganna say head or valve cover isn't on there right. But check the fuel pump first.

At the back of the head, in the cover rail, is a half moon cutout for machining the cam bearings at the factory. I lost one of these myself and it will pour copious amounts of oil out in a hurry.

I FORGOT ALL ABOUT THAT. lol. I didn't even think of that thing. Heh..

I used The Right stuff to silicone it in there when I redid my engine.

The culprit was the fuel pump. Replaced it and took a drive with negligible oil loss.

Then pulled the valve cover to replace valve seals no major leaks from there and half moon took a hammer and screwdriver to remove.
Valve seals were beyond toast. Most of the smoke screen is now gone. What is getting by the rings is just going to keep smoking.
