Yeh..what's the function of digital gauges? What if you forget what's high on the digital gauge..that'd suck.

back in 97 my grandpa took me to the 50 anniversary to the air force. one of the pilots of the SR-71 was there answering questions. and he talked about how in the early 80s as part of a project to modernize the SR-71 they installed digital gauges. as a result the pilots could not read fractions of a given unit because of the resolutions of the digital gauges. so they spent even more money reinstalling the analog gauges.

haha. Yeh. With an analog at least you can tell what's really hot and what's really cold. If you go by digital it's like "210 degrees? Is that hot?"

Digital gauges are useless for the most part. They're one of those things that only retarded cars have. They can easily be done better by analog.

Yeh, if someone can up with good digital gauges, then it'd be good to switch. No one has though.

I hope to drive my tercel for another 10...at least.

good digital gauges are really expensive, i used to have a couple of defi units but ended up selling them to buy christmas presents, ive used analog ones for a long time

With a "clock" type dial gauge it is faster to read, end easier to see which direction it is going if it is changing rapidly. I think even the professional racers are still using dial gauges just for this reason. Personally I would use nothing but mechanical gauges, more reliable and you can still read them if the electrical system fails. Even a simple fan belt failure can look really bad if you can not "see" what is happening. In my professional opinion the digital gauges in the new cars are a marketing gimmick to impress people who do not know what the readings mean anyway. They are only slightly better than an idiot light, and not as reliable.

Well. that is probably true (like tachometers in SO many cars nowadays - AS IF 99% of people used them/knew what they were/did...), but I think a very close second to the marketing angle is that the bean-counters must love them; they have to be cheaper than dial gauges and easier (ergo, cheaper) to install during manufacture of the vehicle - heck, no tubes or cables - just a couple of wires and sensors at the information origin point.
In fact - I'd bet the bean-counter version is the A reason...pardon my ignorance, but do most cars come with digital dashs nowadays? Or maybe a real mechanical/analog gauge for the speedo only?

My mom's 2004 toyota solara (camry) is pretty much still all analog. THe only digital gauge is the trip, which isn't a bad idea to have digital. Otherwise all her gauges are still analog/mechanical.

Now I dont know if they're actually controlled by analog or if it's just digital sending to a mechanical needle.
