When i start the car in the morning, the choke closes almost instantly.(thats what it normally does, right?) Unfortunately, it does not open in about 3-5 minutes of idling and i get a very rough idling and intense smoke from the exhaust. If i open the choke manually after i remove the air filter or just rev the engine, it starts just normally sans smoke and rough idling.
Since i live in a temperate country and have no need for the automatic choke to operate and warm up the engine, is it possible to do some tinkering to the carb so that the choke can be disengaged permanently?
Will appreciate anybody's technical opinion.
Choking on the carb choke!
Re: Choking on the carb choke!
There should be a choke opener diaphram on the front of the carb. You could probably take a length of light wire and carefully wire the choke open so it never closes. If you always have warm temps...like you say...you don't need the choke and you are losing mileage.

Thank you for your advice sir, will do as you say.
Re: Choking on the carb choke!
The carb has two chock pull off diaphragms. You have to blip the gas pedal for the choke to pull off so it sounds like your system is working normal.

Sir Keith, do you mean having to disassemble the diaphragm on the carb?

no, just pump the gas is what I think he meant. Blip it for a second to open up the choke.
Re: Choking on the carb choke!
Need to take the air cleaner off..use some carb cleaner to make sure the choke shaft and so forth are loose..then maybe a little light oil on all the pivots. Make sure the choke opener in front is getting good vacuum...check hoses.
I've been starting my car with no choke at all (have a manual choke) takes a minute or so cold to get it to idle right even in warm weather.

No. When the choke closes, the idle screw is up against the fast idle cam. It will not let the cam go back to the normal position until the gas pedal is pressed a little, just enough to lift the idle screw off the fast idle cam. Then, unless the engine is really cold, the vacuum diaphragm should pull it out of the way and open the choke.jrpamn21 wrote:Sir Keith, do you mean having to disassemble the diaphragm on the carb?
Re: Choking on the carb choke!
There is an unloader that opens the choke to about 1/8 open...then the opener on front that opens it all the way....I'd say the unloader diaphram at back.
I will say that my autochoke worked flawlessly all the time I was using it as long as I kept the choke shaft loose and lubed. Put the manual in due to claims of much better mpg...which I didn't see.
