I tried once and it didn't work for me. <_<
Ended up having to use the filler holes on the side of the trans.

Putting oil or grease in there isn't a bad idea. I've seen some old shifters get pretty stiff and rusty in that area. To get at the shifter bushing you have to take out the snap ring which is easy enough with a flathead screwdriver, and then the shifter comes out. You don't need to take the 6 bolts out that hold the thing on.
why would you do this? while the car is in the air to drain the fluid, just add it in with a pump... or are you doing this because you don't have access to a lift, so you jack the car up enough to remove the bolts, then drain the fluid, put them back in then fill the tranny through the hole...
-then, how do you know when it's at the right level? Just add exactly 3.5qts and pray?

It's not hard to fill it from the filler holes, just get a funnel and some PVC tubing and run it up to the hood. It takes a little while because of the viscosity of the gear oil. Keep the length of the tubing to a minimum and use the thickest that will fit. For a few bucks, it beats drilling holes in the transmission case.
You can buy plastic hand pumps that fit on top of the gear oil containers so you can pump the gear oil in....still takes a while.
When I bought my car it was hard to shift due to the rubber boot around the shifter being split and a little water getting in there...and very dry. I cleaned up all the grit, dirt, and rust and put some gear oil inside the boot thru the split....has worked very well since.
I also made a flannel boot to go over the split rubber one...had to smear it with grease so I could glue it down to the top of the trans...there is more air blowing over the top of the trans than you'd think.

I think we are getting confused about 2 different things here:
1. Putting oil down into the hole where the shifter comes out from.
2. Filling the tranny with oil via the hole where the shifter comes out from.
I was just asking about the #1. Because, I noticed it's kinda dry in there, and "creaky". Thanks for the tips on the grease. The shift action is getting a little stiff.
As for the #2, this might be a bad idea.... because you are assuming that the upper chamber where the shifter comes out is connected to the tranny. It might or might not be, but it's better to follow the proper procedures.
And, to whomever gave me the idea to use the wiper fluid pump for filling the tranny, THANKS!

I put about a 1/4 cup of gear oil in that boot...when I checked it later it had drained...some had seeped out above the trans...but most probably drained into it. You'd have to take the shifter out to get much in though.sacwac wrote: As for the #2, this might be a bad idea.... because you are assuming that the upper chamber where the shifter comes out is connected to the tranny. I have an extra washer pump laying around...does that actually work OK????
Might also work to get the oil out of the engine sump for the lazy one's among us.
