Trip Notes and Photos

Post by nottheactress »

Well, all those recommendations for what sorts of tools and things to bring on a road trip were great, but... I didn't need a thing. My recent drive from Salt Spring Island, BC, to Dawson City in the Yukon was smooth sailing the whole way--in so far as the car is concerned, that is. The weather was often uncooperative: I drove through snow, rain and hail, and there was only one day out of the ten I was on the road that it didn't snow. It was also a lot colder than I was expecting. BC is having a very slow spring; often there was snow on the sides of the road, many of the lakes were still frozen and the trees were barely budding at all. It was, nevertheless, an amazing trip--all 3,505.1 km of it--with absolutely gorgeous mountains, awesome little towns and some very, very crazy roads.

I'm really impressed with how the Inconvenience behaved: I didn't have any car trouble at all--didn't even have to refill the washer fluid--and got pretty good mileage on the highways. There was heaps of space for all my stuff, and sleeping in the back was pretty comfortable. I did end up on some rather rough gravel roads, and also a section of partially-melted packed snow, with no difficulties at all.

I've posted a set of photos on Flickr with long(ish) comments. Check them out here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/mlledefarg ... 958568313/

I hope to get out on the road again soon. Everything in town here is walking distance from everything else, so I haven't touched the Inconvenience since I got into town last Wednesday and I'm really starting to miss driving. But considering how completely atrocious gas prices are up here, it's probably not a bad thing that I don't need to drive anywhere.

Thanks again for all the great advice. Even if I didn't need it this trip, you never know about the next one...

I retire in 2011, I think I'll do your trip then. I don't have a Tercel anymore but I hope to have some kind of a minivan to sleep in on trips like that.

All I can say is that driving that kind of road while crying is not a good thing, going up you'd have wanted to stay to the right on those blind corners...should have thrown a little food for the fox as good luck...have seen a few times I spooked while out camping, but was too cheap to do the motel thing for the most part, just moved. There is nothing like facing a little "wilderness" out on your own...builds character and memories. At least you missed the bugs?
Give a boy a gun-give a biatch a cell phone-and pretty soon you almost got yourself a police state.
