auto transmission

Post by warbstrd »

At what speeds are the transmission shift points? I'm confused, (the online fsm = automatic transmission - automatic shift diagram) there it looks like the 2nd-3rd is around 50mph (i do have the 55f ?) Mine shifts WAY before that, but in this post http://www.tercel4wd.com/forums/viewtop ... =a55f#p418
The main problem lies between the 2nd and 3rd gears. The upshift point into 3rd from 2nd is WAY too high (50mph under light acceleration),
I know he had other problems, but isnt 50mph normal or am I reading the FSM wrong? The reason I'm asking is mine shifts from 1st-2nd around 10 mph and i cant really feel the trans shift from 2nd-3rd, but i think i felt something ever so slight at 35 mph or so.....when I'm doing 65mph the engine is racing and I dont think im still in second, because can punch it and it will downshift. I'm doing a trans flush tomorrow and complete tune up including new brakes, and synthetic brake fluid, spark plugs, wires everything....

oh, its an 84 automatic

if your mileage is fine then it's probably shifting just fine.

Hi warbstrd,
Your trans should shift from 1st to 2nd at anywhere from about 8 mph to about 32mph depending on throttle valve position. And then it should shift from 2nd to 3rd at anywhere from 13mph to 65mph again depending on throttle valve position. If yours always shifts from 1st to 2nd at 10 mph no matter how hard your stepping on the gas then you probably have a Throttle valve or linkage problem. If the linkage checks out ok then unfortunately it's inside the trans. Good luck!

Cheers.....................Todd

I have only been driving it for one day, just got it, and noticed how the engine raced on the highway doing 65+mph. i need a tach to be sure..im just going to do a complete tune up today..it just seems like after 55mph the transmission needs a 4th gear.
