For the bigger jobs,I took a piece of 1x8 pine board long enough to reach from fender to fender and put a border fence around it with 1/4 round molding.
Then,on the underside,attached a couple of thin strips that are A) spaced and sized to fit in the trough inside the fenders where the hood rests,andB) tapered to match the forward slope of the fenders.This just makes this shelf sit level.
So,if I am going to use several tools and remove a number of parts,I just set this board across the engine compartment,fender to fender.
I don,t have to set things on the air cleaner or....
Also,when necessary,the whole thing can be carefully lifted up and moved
