Tercel dying in idle, need ideas.

Post by brett »

I have a 1984 tercel - though the engine may be a slightly different year (it had an engine swap about 8 years ago and I'm not sure the new one is an '84) since getting it we've replaced the thermostat, radiator, and carburetor (though I can't completely vouch for the new carb) also an exhaust leak was pluged and almost all of the vacuum hoses have been replaced and checked several times for leaks. It dies occasionally at stops and big turns, it also dies anytime we set idle bellow about 2000 rpms (don't know how to set timing exact unless it's at 950 so that's off a bit too) I'm pretty inexperienced with working on cars so I've had friends helping me and I really need some ideas for what to try/ trouble shoot next.

-Thanks

sounds carb like to me.

Check to make sure it's bolted down right. I accidently put the metal vaccuum lines under my carb and well..it wouldn't run well.

I lost the idle on mine when one of the vac hoses on the pass side came loose. You might still have a vac leak or something routed wrong? See if you can adjust the idle circuit?

On the carb you have 2 fuel solenoids, one is for fuel shut-off the other is low speed (idle) circuit, sounds like you could have lost the low-speed solenoid, FSM has diagnostic procedures for testing but also be aware of the wiring to solenoids, if memory serves, my first one had this problem after changing out the rad and turns out I damaged a wire, once repaired all was good, might be worth a look.

this may seem odd but switching the fuel solinoid locations may be worth a try.
do not know why this worked for me.
my manual shows them one way and other manuals show them the other way
i just know it worked
i was having pretty much the same problems your having after installing a different engine and carb
Love those Tercell 4x4 wagons but they sure suffer from road noise.
