I need a tranny, 6 speed, bad.

Post by Neu »

So I need a new tranny for my 85 tercel sr5. I"m currently running on only 3 gears, 1st, 2nd and 5th, with reverse. EL still works.

But I live in MOnroe, Oregon, which is near Eugene, or corvallis.

Any help would be great.

U-Pull its are i think $125 when you pull it yourself. If you do pull it yourself make sure you pull the input shaft out from the back of the bellhousing (4 or 6 bolts on the back of the bellhousing) and make sure that gear on it is in good condition. After going through a few junkyards looking for a solid tranny you'll get real good at installing/uninstalling em lol. Good luck, and be sure to have fun!

I've bought 3 of these transmissions at the Pull-A-Part in Nashville, for $55 each. I am pulling every one that I see come onto the lot, since they are getting so hard to find. You're right, Neu, most junkyards want as LEAST $350 for one, and in some cases much more. The last one I pulled completely by myself, which is a pretty major mechanical accomplishment for me !! :D
1984 Tercel 4wd Dlx. - 192K miles.
1985 Tercel 4wd SR5 - 185K miles (not running)
1986 Tercel 4wd Dlx - 210K miles (dd)

Only 3 to go for the whole set ! lol

Its pretty simple to pull a tranny, take out the kframe reinforments, rear driveline, front CV's, tranny stiffener bars on either side of the tranny, rear tranny mount, gear shifter, speedo cable, clutch cable and bellhousing bolts. trickiest part is pulling the gear shifter imo. I've got it down to a science now with the tools needed only takes me about 20min. hope that helps some!

I didn't take any pics, but it really isn't all that difficult to do......if you knew how green I am at doing that level of mechanical work, you would have no fear about tackling the job. That said, it does take me quite a bit longer than 20 minutes to pull one, but with practice and getting all the tools organized, I can definitely believe it's possible to do that. I hope to get the parts and rebuild these transmissions that I have.......one has a bad 5th gear, another one just doesn't pull at all, makes a grinding noise when you let out on the clutch, and the 3rd one I don't know if it's good or bad.....just pulled it out of a junkyard call because it was there and it was cheap !
