Alright guys, i'm scared to ask...I have a noise

The noise is coming from the backend (rear axle/rear part of the exhaust).

I'm scared my rear axle just went out.

I smell something like ATF after I drove it for a while, there is a clanking noise, which i thought was my exhaust, since it has fallen off and was resting on the axle.

It's an 85 4wd car, and I did submerge a good amount of the car in water, but drove out just fine, think maybe i got water in there?

it's like a banging/(I dont want to say grind, but it doesn't actually sound like it)It almost sounds like my exhaust is on the ground, but it's not, I've zip tied the muffler to the bracket (bushing thing wouldn't stay on). The noise comes and goes, but it's usually most of the time at 50+mph. If I hear it below that it usually goes away pretty quickly.

alright, there's a lot of fluid coming out of where my brakes are on the driver side...it's actually pooled a little on the ground.


So differential pinion seal?

so walk me through replacing the driver side wheel bearing/axle seal. I gotta get this done fast.

Replacing the axle seal is easy, replacing the bearing not so easy.

Pull the wheel
Remove the brake drum
Align the holes between the wheel studs over two of the axle retaining nuts.
Use a 6" extension, ratchet and appropriate size socket to remove the two nuts
Rotate the axle to align the holes over the other two nuts and remove them
Pull out the axle
Pull the seal out of the axle housing, replace with a new one
Take axle to a shop to have the bearing pressed off and a new one pressed on
Insert new axle very carefully as to not damage the new seal

If I had a guess the sound you are attempting to describe is like metal scraping? As if your dust cover was scraping on your brake rotor if you had disc brakes.. With fluid leaking out its probably a wheel seal, and for that to go your bearing would have gone out. Mine just did the same thing. It's a fairly simple process and the FSM does an excellent job of walking you through it. Do yourself a favor and replace passenger and driver side rear wheel bearings and seals, I got all my parts at http://www.rockauto.com very inexpensive compared to chain auto parts stores around here. (would have been twice to three times as much!) make sure you drain your diff and pull it to make sure its still in good shape while you are at it.

The only problem is i can't find the right bearings on rock auto, they have the front wheel drive ones, but they aren't sealed, so they aren't the right ones.

You made the "pull out the axle" step sound so miniscule. I'm having a helluva time getting it to come out. Am I gonna have to break down and get the special toyota puller tool or is there another way that you guys have figured to make it easier.....Can I just use my standard gear puller in some unique way or something?
