C isn't carb.
The 4M engine (no, really, it's just 4M, no more letters or numbers) is a carbed engine.
I have one "3AC" and 3 "3A". The 3AC came out of Cali.
I've seen that "C" is California-spec emissions. Inother words, its capable of passing CA emissions standards. Thats what I've seen it as, but whats funny is that they only did the C on carbed cars. But not all carbed ones have the C. I'm guessing they assumed all EFI models were capable of conforming to CA specs? Though, some EFI engines do have some CA-only options (my 5SFE for instance has 2 different styles of dizzy... mine happens to be FED)

I have owned 4, all '83-84 years, and one had 3AC (the 1983), the others all had 3A. Near as I can tell, all of the engines appear identical in every way (internally and externally) except there is one slight difference I noticed in the carbs having to do with the way the fuel cut off solenoids are installed. All of them had catalytic converters.
Im curious to know the carb differences between the models. Ive got a box of 5 carbs here and 3 of them are identical. One has a couple different lines on teh very front and one has only a 2 wire harness.
Im assuming the one with the 2 wires is out of an earlier tercel.....maybe an 83 or possibly a previous generation (80-82)
And I think the one with the choke opener and another large metal line up front is the C model.
