Where'd top gear go?

Post by Lazymechanic »

It just dissappeared one day, honest. I shift into fifth and its just not there. Tell me there's something simple going on. Tell me I just need to climb under there and turn the "make 5ht gear work" bolt a quarter turn. :(

Wish it were that easy. If you are into fixing manual transmissions, the fifth gear is located in the front compartment, its not with the main gear cluster.

From my car, 5th gear isn't a huge deal. Hell i'm driving without 3rd or 4th. your gas mileage shouldn't plumit, but it will be a lil worse. 5th saves you about 300-500rpms over 4th.

Yea, I've been going like this for about a year now. Beinzaz I gotta heavy foot 'n all, I'm starting to burn oil. I guess I can't complain too much. It was a $500.00 car with 147k on th odo already. I just dread the next old british bike I win on ebay that's three states out. 10 hour drives tend to help me push things over the edge.

yeh, If I was you, i'd go ahead and have the tranny switched. It isn't an expensive job. depending on where you are, tranny's can be cheap. 350 bucks around here for a junkyard tranny. it can be up to 800 or so though. so check on that, and maybe let a mechanic do it yourself? or have him do it. You wont spend too much, and it'll be worth it.

My tercel was 150 bucks, I spent 350 on a motor, i have 550ish into it total and it's a great car, an everyday driver and i put 400+ a week on it. I dont have 2 gears, but it drives fine and I'm still pulling 20+ mpg. The car is WORTH fixing up.
