Carb Mixture screw

Post by ptothej »

Possibly a stupid question.. but that screw on the side of the carb is the mixture screw isnt it? And I assume loosening it off will make it leaner? What is the factory setting for that.. or where should that screw be set at?

You are probably turning the warm idle adjustment not the mixture screw. The thinner screw to the left (by the accelerator cable) is the cold idle adjustment, the larger screw to the right of it is the warm idle adjustment. There is a fuel mixture adjustment screw below the warm idle adjustment but it is covered with a plug from the factory that must be drilled out to access the screw. Chances are that you do not need to adjust it, there are probably other carb issues. Download the "1985_Manual" file from this site http://www.tercel4wd.com/1985_Manual.pdf It describes access to the mixture screw in detail. A common "rich mixture" issue is the rupturing of the AAP (aux. accelerator pump) diaphragm. I'm dealing with that one myself but can't locate a new part. If it idles poorly when cold and smells rich that could be it.
