1st thing that makes me think there is a problem is the fact that there is a distingishing spot on the radiator where the hot and cold seperate itself. and its way neer the top.
2nd i know the temp gauge might not b e acurate cause the swap but if it is than thats a problem, it wants to be 3/4 up the bar.
im gona bring home a heat gun to messure engine temps all over the motor tonight and ill report on that.

you need to find some info on the resistance of the sender on the new motor. If it has the same testing procedure (x temp = y resistance) then you know that the temp gauge is as accurate as it was with the old motor. You could also try swapping in the old sender if the threads are the same to get a straight up comparision.
Not totally sure how it works, but the 3AC is bassackwards from other engines. Most have the stat on the outlet from the head going to the top of the rad.Jts wrote:The 3A, and I believe all A series engines have the thermostat at the cold water inlet. I now use a section of sheetmetal wedged into the groove top and bottom on the back of the rad to partially block it, but can't do it unless highs are 50F or below.
Normally the rad will hardly circulate in winter...in summer the fan rarely runs.

I've seen a lot of imported engines with t-stats on the lower hose. VW TDI's are that way, Toyota A's and some others are.... Buick's 4.3L diesel I believe is on the lower...

well i got the coolant system fixed, added a bleader in my lower hose pipe, and in the back by heater core. external gauge installed runing at 180-190
dash back togeather and even a cd player in it. also finshed the exhaust clear back.
its registerd and insured now,
it runs great power is right there plus the 4.10 gears help out to. tires are to small for on the free way. seems like its geting more peppy each day, it drive like a regual car. unlike my weber 4ac 83.
the only problem i have now is cold cold starts, it idles at 200ish giving throttle does absolutly nothing. then after a min or to idle will jump up to warm up mode and be normal.
sense thats my only issue as of now im very happy with the swap, i wish the dissy and inake pointed the other way so more people would be incliened to do this.

Sensor troubles.... Thats what I'd suspect.
It could have adaptive intelligence in the ECM. "Learns" how you drive. Plus, the seals are probably being re-swelled after sitting for a long time.

the 4afe is a beast in the snow, i put some 195/75/14 winterforces on it and it just plows threw the snow, we have about 2 feet in our long driveway with about 3 inch of ice below that from the last storm all my nabors are outside shuveling so they can get there cars out, i just back it out put it in 4 low and let the snow fly, its also a very wet snow, it had been raining at night and snowing during the day. theres no way my 83 would have the power to get out of this.
it also is so much better to drive around town so my better power band. every t4wd should have this motor in it.

did you have a chance to see what kind of MPG you got before the snow flew?
Too bad is was so much work to alter the firewall and exhaust. It would be nice if someone would work up a list of parts to do a distributorless ignision conversion, I suspect it would make this conversion a lot simpler.
Have you given any thought to writing a procedure and list of parts you needed to make this work for our benefit?

as with it being awsome in the snow, my wife got stuck in her explorer in the driveway about 18inch ontop of ice, and i pulled her out with the tercel, then go myself out without a hickup!!
as far as mpg i was geting around 20-26 braking it in , but then the snow feel, then it was broke in so i was at wot alot.
i still need to hook a light to to the check engine light wire to see what kind of codes are in the computer. it fires up right away every time havent had a single issue with it yet. exept the idle drop at cold start up for about 30 sec.
but it drives great i can let it idle itself in first in stop and go trafic without any bucking or surging.
distributorless igintion would be sweet, i would of been scared trying to get that to work along with all the fuel injection at the same time.

I plan on doing a 4af swap, did you have any trouble with the hight of the engine to the hood? or when you welded the mounts did that take some hight off?
