So, I finally got to test out the 4wd in my '86 six speed. It works, but only in EL. Is that the way it's supposed to be or is their something wrong? I tried to put it into second, since first isn't syncronized, and it just died. Many thanks.

shifting from EL to first isn't possible.
there IS a syncro for first gear, but it only works at very very low speeds.
In 4wd, from a standing stop in snow, i shift from EL to 1st, to 2nd and so on. It blows the doors off of everyone even my friends impreza awd.

Working fine now. I guess it just needed some mud beneath it. Shifts through all the gears flawlessly. I did manage to almost get it stuck today. I sat there, in the mud, contemplating the walk back to my house should I not be able to get it out under it's own volition. Luckily, it never came to that.

Check to make sure all your tires are the same size. Having one tire in a different size on a Tercel 4WD can make life with the 4WD system a little interesting.
