Not likely the clutch is different, but to be sure see if there is a part number difference for the '86 and '83 clutch. though there are several issues here, one is the flywheel (on the engine), the other is the location of the clutch lever arm (on the trans). I have seen a number of these from different years and did not notice any difference, though that does not mean there is not.
The part number check would tell you if they use the same clutch or not.
The front differential has a different gear ratio on the '86 transaxle than on the '83. That could cause a problem when you are in 4wd, not in 2wd. You will either have to change the front diff from your old trans to the new one, or change the rear diff to the same ratio as your trans. The later diff final drive ratio is lower than the earlier one. The lower ratio is better for off road, the higher one is quieter on the hwy since the engine turns slower. Fuel economy is about the same with both.
Transmission issue?
There is a difference, apparently. The first clutch I bought from Autozone did not fit. If I remember correctly, it was the throwout bearing that was different. Ours is an 86, I think they ordered an 85 kit and it had the correct throwout bearing.
Hope you didn't put the clutch plate in upside down, I don't think it works at all if you do that.
You do need to address the issue of the different ratios between the rear end and the front differential.
Added note: I bought a throwout bearing from Toyota for the vehicle It it was the correct one, I think AutoZone may have put the wrong one in the first kit. The car was made in May 86.

You might be OK if you NEVER put it in 4WD unless in mud...loose gravel...or snow. On pavement it will do a major stress test on the whole drivetrain...till something pops.

i dont even know how you could get it out of 4wd with diffrent ratios, when i got my car it had diffrent tires on it , hard as hell to get it out. now after beating her in the woods and have low air in a tire it doesnt like to come out.
i wouldnt recomend using 4wd at all untill the ratios are fixed. could you pull the front diff off the old tranny and put it on the new one?

A bit of an update
transmission: still hard or sometimes impossible to engage gears from neutral - took it to a transmission shop today and was told that its either 1- my clutch or 2 - the cable since the clutch is dragging and not disengaging properly. Transmission appears to be okay.
NOw what could have possibly gone wrong with a brand new clutch?
- I installed it the wrong way aroud - what is the correct way anyways. Factory manual makes it hard to see. any suggestions?
- the cable is stretched out or the adjuster is not working properly.
- the clutch kit is crap or the wrong one.
What to do.....shop charges me 800-1000 bucks for a new clutch install....thats even if i need one after all.

You need to see visually if the arm is moving on the bellhousing.
Need to use the FSM info to be sure your cam and sector are adjusted and working right.
You can shim the ends of the clutch cable using heavy wire.
I be real sure about all this before I'd take it all apart again.
