My dad and I are rebuilding a transmission from a 1986 Tercel 4WD SR5
Transmission is now off....we took off the bell housing! all went fine. Then there is a divider wall/plate between bell housing and gearbox itself. the wall is about an inch in depth and attaches right onto the gerbox. After several attempts of trying to take it off using a soft hammer etc ...our attempts failed. All the gears are off from the outside of the divider plate so it should be just the case of taking off the plate in order to get to gears. It seems that one of bearing might be stuck. Not sure. IF anyone has ever attempted this please let me know as I am very eager to get this on the road after we completely rebuilt the engine (3A) this summer with 275 K km on the clock
I have not taken a terc trans appart but have done other transmissions. You may have to remove the transfer case and housing from the other end.
On some trannys the main shafts are mounted to the plate and you have to remove everything else off of the housing from the other end to get this end plate free from the rest of the trans assembly. Once you can look inside the case the way to get it free will become obviouse. Also sometimes there are set screws or pins in the side of the case holding the parts together. Do not force anything until you know driving a pin out with a hammer is the correct proceedure or you might damage the housing.
BTW, did you find a rebuild kit for this trans, how much was it and where did you get it?
Good luck, post some pics.
There is someone on this list that has a factory trans overhaul manual, I do not know if they ever posted it in the downloads area or not.
I think the FSM for download on the main page contains transmission info.
post some pics! get all the gears heat treated for more power too (and rebuild that engine with the paradise racing 4A-C power pack) either that or a 20V swap
Tercel 4WD "POWER WAGOON" with 4A-C
aka: "no powa steering tercel, oh oh oh!"
mods: ignition at 10 DBTDC and 90 octane gas.
So here is what happened....I took tranny to the shop and they were going to charge me around $3000 Canadian for the overhaul of the tranny...but they also managed to find me a used one that was reconditioned for about 1200$$$ So i said YEAH! I now have my tercel back on the road with a new MOTOR, TRANNY, CLUTCH< DRIVESAHFTS< ALTERNATOR ETC ETC ETC >.... drives like new.
