The title pretty much says it. What I have done is tightened tthe carb down and now there are no air leaks in the carb, and that helped a little, it looks like there are 2 sensors, one near the choke mechanism, and the other down on the opposite side, and they are connected with the choke mech all on the same wire bundle, when i unplug that i can get the idle down close to where it needs to be but its really rough, then when i plug it back in the car dies... soo i guess im just asking for a clue and a little help,,, maybe some actual part names or a schematic... and for the technical stuff:

Sadly 2wd (this is my experiment)
factory carb
3A-C engine

agreed, i would check for leaks first before adjusting or tinkering anything.
new vacuum hose is cheap anyways (30 to 80 cents a foot) it probably need replacing. around 7 feet is what the tercel will need.

Yes, this would most likely be the best solution.Kusuriya wrote:Would it just be worthwhile to try and replace all the vaccum lines because of the age?
I did that a few weeks ago, its simple: take off the old vacuum lines, one at a time, measure them, then cut a section off the new line you bought.

On my '83 they used a high quality vac hose (silicone?) which unlike what you usually find...was still mostly in good shape after +20 yrs and could be trimmed on any bad ends and reused. I had one loose end and one split...might look at the large hoses that go to the charcoal canister...these can melt and totally fail.

actually, i did manage to get it to come down, i think far enough to pass emmisons.. it just took 3 cans of carb cleaner... its still a little on the high side, and the hoses that go to the charcoal canister are new... the previous owner replaced them when he got rearended and was having problems starting the car after that.
SeaFoam?
Weber?
Disconnect everything from the TVSV?
lol.
One thing to try is to eliminate vacuum at the source to see if the idle comes back. If it does, work backwards to track the issue down to a certain hose or componant diaphragm.

lol id put a weber on it... if it didnt need to pass emmisons in Washington. My freind has only once seen an older car with a weber on it manage to make it thu emmisons. and the engine dies when i stop the vac XD tried that, im thinking the carb is dirty and old.. if i can get it thu emmisons this year next year is a free for all for it, itll be 25 yo and not require emmisons soo ill be good to replace the carb with a new one.Typrus wrote:SeaFoam?

Okay, i got the Idle down to around 900 (i dont have a tach soo im really by earing the thing) now the vaccum leak seems to have been in the TP line, i disconnected it from the carb and plugged it. but im not sure if the vac switch is the problem, because if i bypass the metal spider that is the vaccum line for that it dies with a quickness. Ill probly try seafoaming the thing, even tho I have probly used 3 cans of carb cleaner on it soo far. im not sure whats going on with it, but atleast i have it kinda running smooth enough to get though, rough idle aside. but im not sure exactly what the TP does soo...its kinda one of thoose things im not sure if i really need it or not.
As an update just to give people an idea if they see the same stuff... the Spark Plug on Cyln. 1 was cross threaded in the previous owners "tune-up" soo i re did the tune up found this chased the threads to fix it and installed the plug proprly and other than the choke being dead its purring like a kitten. thanks for the help peopleKusuriya wrote:Okay, i got the Idle down to around 900 (i dont have a tach soo im really by earing the thing) now the vaccum leak seems to have been in the TP line, i disconnected it from the carb and plugged it. but im not sure if the vac switch is the problem, because if i bypass the metal spider that is the vaccum line for that it dies with a quickness. Use grease when you do this and it should hold most of it?
