Refuses to idle

Post by thebigbread »

Ever since i cleaned out my pump & done a tune-up on my tercel, it refuses to idle. Its absolutely fine if you keep it revved, but the second you let your foot off the gas, it dies. I thought it might be the fuel pump, but there is enough fuel in the sight glass. Any suggestions?

Find the fuel/air mixture screw and back it out all the way. Spray carb cleaner through the port, put the screw in carefully until it just bottoms, don't tighten, then back out two turns. Adjust as needed for a smooth idle.

Recently had the same problem...turned out to be a disconnected vac line on the pass side of the carb.

Found out what also might be the cause: a bolt is missing off the egr valve, maybe air is seeping in there? ill check the vac lines, & while im at it i will try keith's fix.

If you have a vacuum leak, you should fix that first. Don't know why I didn't think of it first, but you can't make any adjustments until the leak is fixed.

Ok, fixed the vac lines but i noticed, my TVSV is broke off (the plastic part broke off the base). since it has 5 vac lines, its probably causing a huge leak... And doesnt the choke & EGR operate off the TVSV?

When I got Goldie, the TVSV was also cracked; this led to a plethora of problems, most of which were solved by a new TVSV; it's pretty vital.

Here is a link to a thread which has a site for a source I found:

I bought a new one from the local Toyota dealer in '05 for $90 - see the thread.
Scour the salvage places. I think someone once wrote that the Corolla of that time used the same TVSV, but do not recall for certain.

Acctually all of the carberated Tototas have the same TVSE valve, a wrecking yard is the best bet, I always have a spare one in my tool box. I have broke several doing other service on my car at various times.

You could probably do a temp fix by covering the cracks with a thick layer of RTV and let it cure overnight. You might need to tie wire the valve together if it broken off (I have done this once and it worked fine). It might disable the valve, but it should stop the leak and it will run okay.

You could also by-pass the valve by placing all of the hose directly to the vac sourse for the normal "run" position. You will have to check the manual for which hose needs to go where, it should not be hard to figure out.

Get this fixed first before you try anything else. You have symptoms of a large vacume leak, this valve is at least one sourse. You should ckeck all of the other vac lines while you are at it.

Or...you could try Typruses setup that doesn't use the TVSV.

It seems as if though the previous owner broke the TVSV too-- there is epoxy around the bottom. Also, my TVSV does not have a spring, just the piston & a small insert that goes into the piston for the "rod". i think the junkyard would be a good bet.
