any help or tips? the car won't hold first gear...pops out about every other time. it would be great if someone said, "aw that's just yer clutch", but that's doubtful. anyway, any help finding a used/rebuilt 6spd standard for an 87 4wd would be great.

It sounds like it is wearing out. You might try this (which I have not done), drain your trans oil, fill it with ATF drive it until it is warm (not too far, and do not load it up too much), and then drain it and replace it with gear oil. It is supposed to clean up and oil scale build-up on syncros and bearings. It might make it last a bit longer. It is a bit of a hassle, but not expensive to do.
I onced looked into a rebuild kit that include both "soft" and hard parts (complete kit), they wanted $660 for the kit. You can get guarenteed used trans shipped to your house (on-line wrecking yards) for $400-500. If there is a self service yard ("Pull-a-part" etc.) near you you can pull one yourself for about $50. It is the only practical way to keep the car running when the trans goes.
I bought a parts car with a good trans for $100, it had an almost new clutch (which I also switched), I saved the engine (in running cond.) and other good parts, and then got $83 in scrap for the rusting hulk without an engine or trans! A bit of work, but worth it for the parts!
Make sure you get a trans from an '85 or newer, the '83-84 has a different diff ratio.
Good luck.

Not sure what the "win rate" is on finding a good used trans...but in your case...if you have no other problems...I would just refill with some good oil and add some moly additive and learn to hold it in gear...if possible.
Give a boy a gun-give a biatch a cell phone-and pretty soon you almost got yourself a police state.

I have a 1984 Toyota tercel wagon for sale . You can buy the entire car for $400, or I'll remove the transmission for $400. The car runs. I'm in Santa Cruz, Ca. It's a 5 speed. It has a sliding metal sun roof that works. The clutch will is slip going up a steep Hwy. and you must down shift. Is ok on more flat freeways. Rear axle has a bad bearing on the left side. One engine tappet is noisy. Car is rusty too. Inside is dirty but could be cleaned up. Some plastic parts of the dash need to be reassembled around the heater area. The windshield is cracked along the lower right side, but it's tolerable. I've replaced the spark plugs and the old ones looked good. Registration is paid through Oct. 07. Smog test has not been done and current tag is not on car. This car is funky!
