front wheel bearings

87 wagon 3ac 1452cc 2bbl, manual 5 sp, 2wd

i need to replace my front wheel bearings and had a couple of questions before i started.

are the bearings sealed? if so, are the races part of the bearing assmbly or are they seperate?

anyone know of a source for a complete knuckle/bearing assembly?

do you have to have a press or can you press it in yourself?

any help would be appreciated. i've already changed inner/outer tie rods, ball joint halfshaft just to find out the f#$%&^g bearing was no good.

The Autozone site has excellent info on our cars - most times better than the FSM. The preceding link takes you to the bearing removal page, and from there you can access the previous knuckle info page.
There are also some mentions on our site, I believe.
I would have thought that Tercel parts would be fairly readily available in HI, given the early-on push of Toyota into the States, via HI. The bearings are the same for 2WD (all) as well as 4WD.

PS: Do you still have $2.72 /gallon gas as was the case back in your first post in '05?

no the bearings are not sealed, you will need a press to dissassemble the whole thing

thanks for url and gas is now $2.86/gal. but i still get 35mph+ on the wagon. :>)

I'm hoping that's 35mpg instead of 35mph . . .

Which island do you live on? When I moved away in 1992, there were plenty of Tercels. I had an 84 SR5, and I sold it when I left to a guy who had already had an 83, but wanted another one for his wife. When I was on Maui in 2006, the only Tercel I saw was broken down and rusting back to the 'aina. I don't see any advertised anywhere in the state on craigslist either. I'm moving back, and would love to bring mine, but it's about $1,000 to ship. Plus, the lack of other Tercels might mean parts are hard to find . . . ???

35 mpg? Must be that warm tropical air?

There are two bearings available, one sealed, one not. They are interchangeable, but most are the non sealed. Either one has to be pressed, but many shops will do this for you for a small fee.

When you replace them, I recommend that you flush out the OEM grease and replace it with a high temp Moly Lith grease. NAPA has some.
