Hi Mickey: My Dad emailed back and said:
It is a 5 speed forward transmission. But when I put it in 4 wheel drive I believe there is a low-low gear, which I rarely use. But even then I think it represents only 5 forward gears.
I think the "low-low gear" is what you are referring to by "EL" (extra low?).

Yup, that's it exactly. That means he has the Tercel's 6 speed transmission.

Just for everyones info, I am looking for a specific one or two parts (probably one) part off of a tranny, not the whole tranny. The reason is shipping cost from somewhere in the world to Kenya Africa.

A local bloke is quoting me $475 US for a Z52F tranny (not the same thing as Z53F or Z54F either), and won't let me pull parts off of it. First, that seems a bit steep, and second, I only need one or two parts off of it. The part is one of the shift forks identified earlier; my Dad is trying to identify which one of those forks are the correct fork.

I'm still waiting for these guys to respond to my email:

You will have to fill in the search field with the part number 36311-16010 and choose Toyota as the Make then click search.

Search result should be:

Item Number MSRP Core Price Price
3631116010 $76.56 $0.00 $52.93
FORK, TRANSFER GEAR

The parts from this website are genuine OEM Toyota parts from a Toyota dealership in Washington State.

However, the way the web site is set up, sometimes parts will be shown up when the actual part number is searched, but not actually be available.

The only way be be absolutely sure is to email them.

I still have my old tranny from my 84 . I had to replace my tranny because I ran it low on oil and it started making bearing noises . It still shifted fine . I have it torn down and it's in 2 or 3 big plastic tubs . Bring your picture and pick your part out of the tub and it's your FREE ! I just kept the tranny for spares but I doubt if I will ever use them . If I kill the trans in my 84 again I'm junking the car  . Anyway , I live in Milwaukie , Oregon . If this is something you want to do PM me and I will give my contact info , Bruce .

My Dad was not able to determine which of either of the parts is the appropriate one, so it looks like I will probably need to take both parts from a used or broken tranny. Just to summarize so far, I'm looking for the Z54F (AL25 chassis) type of transmission which contains the parts. I am willing to buy the entire used/broken tranny just to get those parts. I have posted pictures for the parts in a previous post; the parts are "No. 4 Shift Fork" and the "Transfer Shift Fork" for the 4WD manual transmission.

For my future reference, I pulled out the identification info for all of the shift forks in the Toyota EPC and correlated them to the 1985 Tercel manual as outlined in the table below

Code: Select all

EPC EPC Manual Manual
PNC: EPC Description: Fig No. Description: page:
-------- --------------------------------- -------- -------------------- ------
33214F Fork, 5th Shift 3307 No. 3 Shift Fork 298
33215B Fork, Gear Shift, No. 4 3307 No. 4 Shift Fork 298
33213 Fork, 1st & 2nd Shift 3307 No. 1 Shift Fork 298
33213F Fork, 3rd & 4th Shift 3307 No. 2 Shift Fork 298
36311 Fork, Transfer Gear Shift, No. 1 3611 Transfer Shift Fork 298
Thanks again for your help.

Bruce was kind enough to pass on the shift forks!! Thanks again Bruce!!

Just for my reference in case these break again when they are installed in the Tercel, I mic'ed what seemed to be the critical dimensions as best I could, and took some pictures to record the dimensions in case someone else in this forum has need of this info in the future.

I apologize for the crude annotations (I only had Windows Paint):
