Motor Mounts

Post by 76RA24 »

Hi

new to board..
Just picked up a 1981 sr5...

I have a few questions...

is it normal for the exhaust down pipe to crack right after the manifold?

are the motor mounts for the 4wd the same for my car?

what about the trans mount? (I assume this would be different due to you guys having 4wd)

how does the 3ac like moving around on 14" rubber?

thanks

Hola Pete. I have an 81 Corolla Tercel as well. Sis calls it "Spongebob" due to hits boxy shape and faded yellow color.

Well, it is a similar setup. Longitudinal engine orientation, FWD that doubles back.

Motor mounts should be the same. When my sis gets back (provided I remember) I will go double-check. I don't thinkthe tranny mount is too terribly different, but I might be mistaken.

I haven't seen directly after the manifold crack, but I have seen the bottom curve of the downpipe split on both sides. Or in the case of SB, the entire mid-section of the exhaust rot off.

What do you mean 14" rubber? 14" rims? No problem at all, so long as the rubber itself is correct. I run 15's on my 4wd when I have the money for tires. Sponge runs on 155R13's. They are tall and skinny, and nobody seems to make them. The rims are 4.5 inches wide I believe, so not a lot of room for expansion. I think 175/70R13's would fit, but be a bit squishy in corners.

A key thing to remember- the Corolla Tercels have Corolla RWD rim bolt-specs. 4x114.3mm. The rest of the Tercels are 4x100mm. This is due to the funky hub design. Anyway, this gives you pretty good options in the area of aftermarket rims. Or even rims off other cars. The early 4-lug Cressida rims will fit. Tires are pretty significant (the Cressida spare steely I have is 205/60R15. It did fit when I tried it on the Sponge, but it hiked the side I tried it on up a good bit. Turned lock to lock in those conditions with no interference. Can't say anything for if all were that size though.
I'd recommend, if you go 15, 195/55R15. Good footprint with good control.

The real issue with going to anything but the super-narrow 155R13's is that you will lose mileage. Even a 175/70R13 would eat you a little bit.

So congrats on your purchase!

In addition to every thing Typrus said, if you are adamant about 14" rims, I'd recommend:

185/60R14. This size will actually keep your gearing the same as OEM. The outer circumfrence of that size is the same as the 155/80R13.

I put polyurathane in my engine mounts, i was going to take some pictures, but that would be pretty difficult as they are in the car. luckily you don't have to remove them.

I bought some polyurathane for installing windows, sprayed the engine mounts with brake clean to get any oil/grease off them, then filled in the empty spaces with the poly, for the rear trans mount, it was similar, but i put a jack under the tranny to take the weight off the mount first.

let it dry for a good few hours before driving, and it will fully cure in a week or so.

my plans for the future are to buy new engine mounts and do this to them, then install them. that should give me some pretty stiff engine mounts and put a little more power to the ground.

According to the wheel calculator I used...my 195/60/14s are 1% undersized. :?:

Hello chaps, i have just aquired some 14"Opel Manta alloys made by Ronal, they are 6j with an et of 30 and am shodding them with 195/60/14 Goodyear Ducaro F1 tyres, this combination actually works out 2.6% or 15mm oversize from the origonal 175/70/13 that were on the Terc, regards from Malvern, ttfn.
That would be an ecemunical matter!
