Online parts seller recommendations?

Hi there -

Just bought an 84 SR5 Wagon with about 203k miles on the clock. It's got the 5/6 speed manual transmission, inclinometer cluster, and a couple of quite attractive rust spots - though it will make for cheap transport while I fix my Volvo 240 that another driver ran into the front of a week ago. The original manuals were still kicking around in the glovebox and I saw that it was originally sold by a dealer in Pittsburgh, PA to a woman in Texas. Somewhere between then and now, it made a move up to Anchorage, Alaska. I'm going through the normal, new-to-me vehicle fluids change / shakedown and have a few questions.

Are there any specifically recommended online parts suppliers for older Tercs? I did a quick search of the forum and nothing specific showed up. Coming from the Volvo 240 world, I know that there are specialty suppliers out there (http://www.fcpgroton.com is excellent for 240 parts) - but haven't found anything specific for the Terc yet.

As far as engine identification, the sticker on the airfilter and the firewall plaque both id the engine as a 3AC model, though when I look at the block just below the alternator, I saw 3A ###... so I'm not sure as to the actual model.

I've already downloaded the '85 shop manual - many thanks to whomever did all of the work scanninng and bookmarking that document - it's going to be very useful!

Up there they will ALL hit you with shipping charges....but you might find one online place with lower charges.

Around here, NAPA has a local distribution place...so shipping is quick...price is low...parts costs a little higher.

Thanks for the tips - I'm checking them out currently.

Any thoughts on engine ID? Chassis plate and air filter (I know, not terribly reliable) say 3AC, though the valve cover and block say 3A.

either is fine, the "C" in 3A-C only stands for "Calaifornia emissions" unless your purchasing emissions related parts, i wouldn't worry about it.

I'm hearing a little bit of a rrr-rrr-rrr-rrr coming from the front left wheel when the steering wheel is at center or left of center. Not very loud, but noticible, and absent from the RH side. CV Joint? Something else?

After having the same noise on my Chevrolet LUV truck long ago, I think I'm pretty safe in saying it's your wheel bearing.

P.S. Don't leave it too long before doing something about it. I had mine lock on me at 60mph on a dike. Not fun.

Sounds good - at least it's giving me warning. Unlike on my 240 where I had a spun bearing and a quickly worn tire.

Well, after pricing out an order and asking specifically, europartsdirect said that they will ship free to Alaska for $49. I've got my fingers crossed.

For the wheel bearings, are the special tools in the manual necessary, or is it pretty much a standard wheel bearing job?
