4wd half-shaft removed... Ummm.... What?
The driveshaft? Why the hey would you remove that? I really don't think there is ANY logical reason to do that.... These are 4wd's, not AWD's. There is no center diff. They are all time front wheel, and the only time power goes to the rear wheels is when in the 4wd position.

Where'd the damage come from?

One half of the two piece drive shaft is removed. (I have heard it referred to as a half shaft since its a two piece, but half of the driveshaft may be a better way to describe it) The U-joints started wearing out and it was causing noise and vibrations. Even though only 4wd uses the driveshaft, the rear end still spins the driveshaft whenever the car is moving.

The car slid into a ditch once, and that caused the majority of the damage you see on the driver side.
