got the 4A-C *now with pics, not 56k freindsly*
I got the 4AC, looks like it will be almost a direct sway, a couple issues i have noticed right away are the engine mounts are differant, the mounts to the tranny are differant, and the oil pan might have to be swapped (drainplug location might make it impossible to do an oil change if i use the 4AC pan)
I'd like to change the engine mounts and headgasket at this time, but my resources are limited at the moment, so that will be postponed.
i'll take some pictures when i start getting into the fun stuff, all i've done so far is remove the SR5 engine mounts, alternator bracket, power steering pump and fan with fan clutch and sprayed it with degreaser.

You will need to swap over the sump and the engine mounts. Pretty much everthing should bolt off the old 3AC and straight on to the 4AC. Aside from a different bore and stroke they are pretty much the same engine.
Make sure that you use a decent non-hardening sealant on the sump, unless you want it leaking oil everywhere
I wouldnt bother with the head gasket unless you plan on carrying out a major service on the 4AC. Since the engine is pretty easy to get at while in a Tercel do all that when you are changing the timing belt (timing belt, idler pulley, water pump, head gasket...).
Cheers,
Terry

i slept in today, so i didn't get any work done, but i picked up some stuff so i can get on with the swap.
-high-temp silicone sealant for the EGR valve and related exhaust stuff
-new intake/exhaust gasket
-carb gaskets
-fiberglass rolls & SS ties so i can insulate the exhaust manifold
-cleaning sprays, oil, coolant, filter, etc...
I'm planning on wrapping the exhaust manifold in order to keep it from super-heating the intake charge like it does from the factory, hopefully this will produce slightly better performance in the summer when the engine cooks itself.

You know the exhuast mannie and intake are bolted together and the intake mannie has a heat exchanger built in to take on heat from the exhaust?
Just a word of caution.... Do not ever let the wrap get moist. You can kiss the manifold goodbye if it does.

yeah, i saw that heat exhanger when i removed the 3A-C intake manifold, and to my suprise, it seems the mechanisim to control the flap in the exhaust header at some point broke, perfect!Typrus wrote:You know the exhuast mannie and intake are bolted together and the intake mannie has a heat exchanger built in to take on heat from the exhaust?

what exactly happens if the wrap gets moist? i've heard of people saying it will rust out the manifold, but that was just hearsay on the echo forums.
The moisture gets trapped against the iron manifold. If you drive for long enough right away afterwards, no biggie. But I'd still be cautious.

Great pix - Thanks!
Also nice to see that someone else works "under the spreading chestnut tree"...
Incidental note to all - an excellent source for free big cardboard boxes to knock down for under the car is a bicycle shop. They cushion the gravel quite well...and can absorb a lot of dino juice.
