4WD Diff problem

Post by Epitaph »

Hey guys, recently aquired a manual 1984 Tercel SR5 4wd wagon, it was unregistered, so i sent it over the pits and fixed the problems, took $2,600 to get it on the road and when i try to put it in 4wd my handling goes through the roof and my acceleration is shit, i can't do much more than 40km/h because it was so unsafe to drive, it was stuck in 4wd and it was making a grinding sound from the rear left wheel, i pulled over to a safe position and called a mate who had a '83 tercel and he came out, put the car in reverse, drove back about a metre then put it in first and then back to neutral and he could pull it out of 4wd.

any ideas why i can't use 4wd? also my gear stick hits the 4WD/FWD gear stick when in 4th....any ideas?

Well, I'd personally start by checking all your tires. Are they the same size? Same make/model or tire? Are they more or less at the same wear level? Are the pressures all the same?

Beyond tires it can get more..... Complicated.

The car is not AWD. It is 4WD. No center diff. Do not try and drive it around in 4wd. Just like a 4wd (4x4, same thing) truck, you will break things.

One differential might have been replaced with a different ratio?

I'd take the console and boots out to see what you have...and look under the car at the 4WD shifter link and so forth.

check the linkage for the 4wd shifter
may be wayout of adjustment to cause it to hit
maybe something is bent
Love those Tercell 4x4 wagons but they sure suffer from road noise.

E-mail me the file to darrin.moore(at)gmail(dot)com and I'll host it for you and send you back the link. Just please put "Typrus" in the message header so I know who it's from and don't just send it to the bin!! ;)

Alrighty. I have a few sound bits. 2 just for fun (exhaust and intake sound) but 2 for semi-diag purposes. The engine bay sound (clicking valves, whining PS pump...) and the rear diff sound. I'll send them when I get home.
