it didnt pass smog and i wasnt prepared to pay a lot to fix it, so the state bought it from me for $1000, which is what i paid for it...i now have a toyota yaris. if i ever get enough money for a 2nd car, i would consider buying another one and using it as an offroad only car.

the state ( meaning CA ?? ) bought it from you for $1000 ???? I've never heard of anything like that, just because a car didnt' pass emissions. no wonder CA is in a budget crisis !! lol !! sorry, shane, nothing personal at all, just suprised that the state would buy a car. what do they do with them ??

Strip them of all recyclable materials and sell off the scrap metal, likely at a profit on aluminum heavy cars, that which ours is not. Or they get them to pass and sell them for a grand... or more. Hell, we've seen Tercs in good shape go for more than 2k! I'm sure the Cali Gov't could sell it to a Coloradoan or maybe Arkansinian.. Arkansasian? nm... for at or above a grand.

well the $1000 thing has requirements. you had to have owned the car for over a year, pay all the registration...if it doesnt pass, theyll pay up to $500 to fix it for you! It had about 250k miles and i needed something i could trust for a long time so i needed a new car and couldnt afford to keep both. It was in reallly good condition besides the smog issue. I was sad to see it go.

Amazing!
Here in STL Metro area (enhanced emissions testing, unlike rest of MO), if it flunks,
you have to spend at least $450 before you can get a waiver if it flunks again; quite a challenge
for some folks. However, all changing in September '07, as 1996 OBDI and prior cars will need
only the safety inspection. Someone finally took pity on mature cars and their owners
(and not all are special-interest cars like ours and their ilk- many are clunkers driven by
less pecunious people).

Well they dont do this for everyone. But i guess its one of the veryyy few perks of living in a state filled with treehuggers. They want your car to run clean so badly, that theyre willing to pay to have it fixed if it doesnt.

With global warming and over-population on the way...we'll all be hugging trees....IF we can find one....that is.

Thats a pity about your car Shanealan, I'm sure someone here might have bought it for parts?

From what I've heard a car uses as much energy being built and transported as it will use in driving around for it's life, therefore the longer we can keep these cars going the less impact we are actually having on the environment... Your comment Mr Gore?
and isn't funny that the governer of California is a keen Hummer Driver!

what i think is funnier is that on 'an inconvinient truth', al gore is driving an SUV around instead of a fuel efficient car.

CA has been doing that car buying thing for years... But problem is that the emmisions laws are so F&(* ed up. Back in the late 80's a Friend of mine who was the projects manager for 4 wheeler magazine converted 10 stock vehicles both new and used and made them higher performance, lower emissions and better gas mileage than stock.... Guess what... None would pass CA emissions because the parts were not approved by CARB, CA AIr Resources Board with an Executive Order#... This was a project done for CARB too... How screwed up is that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
