Take a look at the broken bearing from my Z54F transmission. It is easy enough to remove as an assembly, still attached to the large gear and shaft. What other tercel transmissions have this identical part? Is this a common part, shared between all the different transmissions, 2wd or 4wd, or 4sp, or 5sp?
Good news - the p/n in the Toyota EPC shows the same p/n for that gear unit (they call it the idler gear) is the same for 4-spd, 5-spd and 6-spd manual trans but looks like you have to use one from the correct year (gear ratio/# teeth?).
4-spd/5-spd/6-spd 82/05 thru 84/08 are all the same p/n and 4-spd/5-spd/6-spd 84/08 thru 88/01 are all the same p/n, but a different p/n from the earlier ones.
The front and rear bearings for the gear are the same thru all years.
You can d/l the Toyota EPC from http://www.yankeetoys.org/docs.htm I've found it to be really useful at times. Because its an older program there are tricks to get it to work on WinXP or Win2K.
waynehoc: Thank you for checking that parts catalog. This will save me tons of time! The local junkyard usually has several different tercels, but probably not my exact '87 4wd. Also, removing and pulling apart a 2wd transmission on site will be a little bit easier than the 4wd.

How much could anyone guess it'd be to have a custom cut of all those gears and shafts?
No wonder reverse makes so much noise... Straight-cut gears!
Yeah, actually, all manual transmissions in cars have straight gears for reverse, as they are cheaper to make, and they don't expect you to go in reverse a whole bunch.
