My engine has developed a bit of a rattle. When I first noticed it I checked it out and found the bolt on the front of the lower fanbelt pully wheel was a bit loose so I tightened it and the noise went away. The rattle has returned but the nut seems to be tight. It has always dripped a bit of oil but now it seems to be more. It is running fine.
Any ideas?

That sounds like a bearing, then.
Or an oil seal.
Time for you to remove the lower grasspanel and have a crawl around underneath the car

The key probably got messed up....you will have big problems if the keyway in the crank gets widened.
I'd put in a new key...maybe replace the lower crank seal? Don't let it go....
Mine was kind of sloppy by a few degrees, but I time it by ping, not timing light.

yes the keyway in the fanbelt pulley wheel is widened and the key is messed up a bit. I'll get the timing belt cover off today and look at the crankshaft.

What is this keyway you speak about? I have never heard that term and I too have a ratle that I thought was water pump but the waterpump checks out OK.

The keyway in the crank looks ok. I'll be off to the wreckers for a new pulley wheel and a key. Is it easy to replace the crank seal?
I'll also now have to reset the alignments of the cam and crank wheels.
Anyone have any tips to put the pulley wheel back on without this happening again. I did the timing belt 6 months ago and that must be when the problem started.
Ogedei:
I would check it out. It sounds like the same thing. What actually seems to rattle is the washer on the shaftbetween the pulley wheel and the bottom timing belt gear.

Just need to torque it to specs? When I did the t-belt the 1st time...the bolt was only hand tight...key was a little loose in the slot...but not messed up. Still using it....but time it by ping as I said.
Seal is not too bad...just don't scratch up the crank any and get the new one in square with the front surface?
