engine swap to 4A-GZE?

Post by Ol' Lass »

Can you swap the 3ac with the supercharged 4a-gze engine? if you could that would be cool, the engine size doesnt seem to be too different the only problem wuold maybe come from the supercharger. has anyone done this?

nobody that still has a working transmission.

Teddy who had the dearly departed Skiwagons site mentioned someone who did this and to paraphrase "ended up with warping, burned out, cracked and sheared off gears" I think

keep it below 100horsies seems to be the mantra for gearboxs

I did find a Tercel in Japan that had a 4ag-e and looks like some kind of wacky racer/ mid 80's techno mobile

good luck

It's a 1.6L. And yes, it was used in the 1988-89 MR2. But I think the supercharged models are pretty rare.

i have a friend that swapped a 4agturbo on to a terceo 80 2wd and is boosting 10 pounds and has had no troubles, also tercel 20v i believe uses a 4wd gearbox in his 20v turbo
tercel 4wd custom suspension, under drive pulley, vented brakes, cold air intake, and plenty more to come

apparently the tranny will go BOOM!

but you could get the gears all heat treated or that cryo treatment done to them, then the power probably wouldn't be an issue, synthetic gear lube would be a plus too.

if you did a GZE swap, i'm pretty sure your going to have to modify the hood to clear components, and also fabricate a custom exhaust manifold.

We need a sticky in the General about this...
ANY Toyota engine with an engine code "A" , i.e. 3"A", 4"A", 5"A", etc will bolt right into our cars.
The issue is in the body and and tranny. The tranny will blow around 100 horses/ 100ft/lb and the body will torque around 130 or so ft/lb.

So in short, yes. There may be a question of fitting the dist, but it should otherwise be alright. I'd recommend a 4AFE or even just a 4A personally.

Bronze gears, right 20v?
I wonder just how much strength comes out of that. Or if they'll just explode instead of shearing?
I want to know the cost of having custom gears cut out of the best steels out right now. Steel from even 10 years ago is FAR inferior to steels these days. A box built with new steel in the same config might take.... 150, 200 horses? Maybe even 350HP. Chromium-Molybdenum gears/shafts/etc would make a monster box... For monster bucks... I want to see if a Subaru box could be made to work. Hard to know, considering how shallow the boxer-4 engines are. They are only as deep as a 2-cyl, so the gear-box sticks pretty far forward. Same style longitudinal configuration though, and can take well over 300 horses in the Impreza's.

If you want to try and find one Ol' Lass, lemme tell you there is nothing local. Believe me, I've looked. Not unless something has shown up in the last 2 months. But if you do, let me know. I'd like to help on the project if I can find time.

What kind of places do heat/cryo treating?

Heat treated brass composite actually. Strong enough to withstand some torture but if they were to detonate, they would get mashed not explode and destroy the case. THe case was also reinforced with welds.

I see many of the members are looking for more power. Trust me when i say that a 4agftzersuv is not the best answer. It is more headaches than it's worth. Exhaust, wiring, computers, fuel...it goes on and on.

Now, say you have the $$$ to do that...ok, now the car. take a 200hp motor, put it in a 82hp car and voila...it works - at idle!

If you choose to still push forward at this adventure, do it right!!! spare no expence or you WILL wreck the car, possibly yourself and anyone you take with you. it is ALOT of work and money. if you got lots of time and spare cash, awesome. go for it.

BAsically, what i'm saying is...if i had to do it again, i wouldn't.

Sorry but just my $0.02.

i want to heat treat my gears, for longevity not for shear power, my max output should be around 130 hp with a sc12 supercharger, i dont think 200hp would be very driveable, those cars guzzle gas and in the wet traction would be a serious issue, also better brakes etc etc, so now im getting some money saved so i can get pistons and rods made for the terc so i can up the boost from the projected 8 puonds to 14 the suprcharger can give

ol' lass, lets see that left corner lamp lense: Show us pictures! Also, why does it seem like you are using a replacement one from a Sprinter Carib as opposed to a Tercel? Where did you get the lense and how much was it? :)
