Fuel Solenoids
I changed my carb on the weekend and I had to change the wiring harness that goes with it as well, and I think I may have spliced the two black wires back to front from their original spot. What would happen driveability wise if I did that? Would that make my idle cycle up and down, and hesitate?

Re: Fuel Solenoids
when i remove the carbs i cut the four wires a few inches above the plug and splice them back together with male and female connectors. all of my tercels are spliced and have the same connectors so i can interchange carbs.JOE wrote:I changed my carb on the weekend and I had to change the wiring harness that goes with it as well, and I think I may have spliced the two black wires back to front from their original spot. working from right fender set the plug with its release side towards the front.
the red wire should be front and near (on the right). when in this position the two wires on the far side go to the solinoid on the rear side of the carb.
the wire on the same side as the red wire (on the left) goes to the solinoid on the drivers side of the carb. i usually trouble shoot the hard way as i do not have any testing equipment.
i am having the same idle problem that you described on one of my cars.
i parked a good tercel next to it and compared vacuum hose connections.
that did not solve it.
i disconnected all of the vacuum hoses on the good car and plugged them.
the car still idled just fine. i tried disconnecting the driver side solinoid and the car still idled fine. when i disconnected the aft solinoid the car died.
so i tried all of this on the bad running car and it idled erratically the same as ever. it also died when the aft solinoid was disconnected. so i removed the carb and put a rebuilt carb on it. it idled erratic too. so i took it off and put an old carb on and it idled normal.
so i guess screwed up the rebuilt carb. (i did it myself)
at this point i'm assuming i have two messed up carbs so i am taking them apart and cleaning them.
any ways this info may or may not be helpfull
good luck
Love those Tercell 4x4 wagons but they sure suffer from road noise.

instead of doing the above i took the carb out of the good running car and put it in the bad and it still would not idle.
so i put the other carb in the good car and it idled just fine.
so i guess it isn't the carb afterall.
damn
now what?

oops the above last two sentences are incorrect
the "two wire" solenoid goes on the drivers side of the carb
the "single wire" solenoid goes on the passenger side (rear) of carb
if they are installed wrong the car will not idle less than 1000 rpm
